User ID: 80315266 United States 05/06/2021 06:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I recently bought a 19" rear tine tiller so I could make a ground level garden plot, I'm thinking about 20'x30', don't want it too big.......I keep making more work for myself dog gone it!! I really want to grow a small stand of Corn. Quoting: scimitar Figure one mature corn for every 5 square feet, you're going to get around 100 pieces of corn out of that 600 sq ft area most likely. I made that mistake once and never will again. If you have a small garden ,vegetables that produce multiple fruit over the season are much better like squash, peppers and 'maters. You can always trade things like peppers , beans and tomatoes for corn. Corn is one of the worst producers on a per acre basis and if you have a small garden it isn't worth growing Who grows corn with 5sqft of spacing? Last year we had 3 corn harvest, first in mid June. We plant tight. 4 cornstalks per sqfoot, 8 inch spacing. Randomly scattered throughout garden. Not a lot less than 60 stalks. Total ears from 3 plantings : around 500 ears. We ate fresh corn all year. Central Alabama. The dead are just the undead waiting to happen. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80006240 Actually my weeds are coming up nicely. I planted some dill because I like to make pickles and it's expensive to buy at the store. I actually had to rip some of them out today because I had too many in one spot. My dill plant (in the AeroGarden) is huge! So pretty. I don't eat it, so I will attempt to dry it and give it away. Make refrigerator pickles. So easy, no cooking needed. Just water, kosher salt, vinegar, spices, dill and cucumbers. I don't care for pickles, but thank you for the recipe! I might try it and give them to someone. First tell the truth, then give your opinion.... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76445703 They make a great fertilizer - it does stink though but it's worth it. Rhubarb. Couldn't be without that. Sage. A lovely one for gravy and stuffings. What are you looking for from your Garden? I like to make pesto, salsa and pickles. I've had pretty good luck so far with my recipes. I'd like to make hot sauces and dried herbs. I always talk about it but never do it. That wild Garlic makes a great pesto, I'd imagine. Nice on Pizza & is very good for you. I usually buy local garlic at the market. I have no luck growing it. Are you talking bulb? I'm talking about the three cornered leek garlic plant. Very hardy and great for bees |

It would be a good idea to grow, thanks. |

Quoting: Superkicker I grew actual strawberries once. I didn't get many but they looked perfect. They weren't sweet either so I wondered if it was a soil problem. Full sun and the right variety for your area. Superkicker |

The rabbits and the squirrels will be all over everything. It's a war. I have a video of a squirrel in my bird feeder and a rabbit and a chipmunk on the ground eating everything he knocked down. All three at once. No birds in sight. |

Biggus Diccus User ID: 78877774 United States 05/06/2021 07:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I love growing perennial plants! I used to run a produce farm and have almost completely given up on annual crops. (I still do peas, beans, herbs, carrots, beets, cukes zukes and melons, potatoes and maybe some hot peppers if I have space) Sea Kale has replaced all other leafy brassicas as it returns year after year and a few leaves are all you need for a meal. Hazel nuts! I started with 3 varieties for pollination, 5 years later I fill buckets with hazel nuts in the fall and plant them wherever I go. Currents (black, red, pink) and gooseberries are hearty little bushes that just keep producing more every year. Great fresh, dried, jams or making wine! Egyptian (walking) onions. I’ll never bother with any other onion, scallion or shallot again. These things just replicate like rodents. I started with a few bulbs two years ago, now I have little clumps (at least 20) of onion all over the yard that are already over a foot tall and very succulent and delicious. I still grow garlic because you can’t replace garlic. Cane fruits: raspberries & blackberries obviously are taking over my yard as well. I have too many varieties to keep track of. I use a lot of cardboard and woodchips to mulch my cane fruits- this keeps the weeds away and really helps the canes establish new growth. I love cardboard. I pull it out of dumpsters and fill my truck any time I go to town. Once I even rented a trailer to haul cardboard home.. also I grow a good portion of my garlic in cane fruit patches- it’s a good companion plant that repels J beetles. Fruit trees! All of ‘em! Apples, pears, plums, peaches and a few oddities. I have several well established trees that produce and many more that are a year or two old. I learned to graft and have some really nice apple rootstock- I probably will be able to make new grafted apple or pear trees in quantity in a year or two. Then I’ll be selling fruit trees! Or buying land to plant them on.. Strawberries are an afterthought to me. They wander around my yard and are a nice early fruit- but speaking of early fruits, have you tried honeyberries? They are the very first fruit of the spring and similar to a blueberry. I have a few established bushes, but last year ordered many new varieties after I realized what I was dealing with. Slow to establish, and not very prolific, but I love fresh fruit so totally worth the space and time they take. That was fun! Gardening is easy if you want it! Be well all! |

Quoting: Superkicker Thanks! I'm going to order seeds soon from Amazon, I'll add them to the list. I need to get a spicy pepper variety kit. If you grow peppers in pots, you can overwinter them indoors, they are all perennials. After year 3 they produce less. It's nice to get a bunch of hot pepper plants, bring them indoors and hand pollinate them so they breed true to form. Let them live three years while you have seend sprouting for yer 4. I put all that in the prepping if poor thread. If it counts, I did accidentally grow a little pumpkin, but I didn't mean to. It just sorta happened. I forgot about it way out in the back of the yard and it regrew from it's own seeds.
