I’m doing a lot of tomatoes and peppers this year, about 36 of each, as well as the normal stuff. Speaking of tomatoes you should look into a few species; Double Rich, which has as much vitamin c as an orange, Caro Red, ten times the vitamin a, indigo rose, has the antioxidants and anthocyanins like blueberries and Tangerine, which has beta carotene and lycopene like a carrot. And if you’re wanting to grow something else to boost your immune system check out black elderberry. |

Added a sprouted slice of potato (thanks to GLP) which is growing like crazy after a rocky start. KALE is a hearty plant. Before you tell me that you don't like the taste let me tell you that homegrown kale is MILDER than even iceberg lettuce. Very different, softer texture than store bought kale. NO, you won't think you're eating grass. Also looking for ideas of very hearty veggies & herbs. Last Edited by NotStarvingActress on 05/06/2021 04:45 PM |

I make salsa but it would be nice if it were healthier. I should probably grow more berries. I like that they do their own thing. The strawberries I have are small and not all that sweet. Nice to snack on though or add to cocktails. Any trick to making them sweeter? Something I can add to the soil? Last Edited by Hot Dog Harry on 05/06/2021 04:46 PM |

My regular plant lady isn't there. Try herbs and mints with lemon scents to keep away mosquitoes. |

We tried Collard greens over the winter here in Florida.... We do have a cover over the raised bed garden, so no Frost issues and we had 4 plants. We had so much by cutting the bottom leaves as it continued to grow taller that for 3 months we harvested way more than we could eat and we giving bags full to all our neighbors...Of course you have to like them, did the same with Brussel Sprouts the leaves are great and actually more tender than the Collards. Don’t think wild ones will get sweet, probably a survival mechanism, but they like June or everbearing like the PH acidic. Depending on what state you’re in you can get a pretty comprehensive soil test for not only PH and NPK but all the macronutrients for about $15. |

I was thinking I could mash them a little and add it to some lemonade and whiskey... |

Finally, finally I can grow a decent garden that's organized and pretty year round. Fennel, Chard, strawberries come back yearly. Potatoes stay in there until the famine making more potatoes. Kale, great for soups and omelettes. Super easy to grow. Chives, thyme, terragon, parsley, all super easy and self propagate. Tomatoes and basil yearly planted to bake with feta cheese for pasta. Blackberries and blueberries, come after the strawberries are done. Which are doing great this year with the cooler temps. Also have a hydroponics aerogarden inside for winter cherry tomatoes. Right now the jasmine and honeysuckle is blooming, the fragrance is delightful. |

I was never a huge fan though. A little to tart for my tastes. He also grew asparagus and that always came up each year... I love that stuff but the problem is it takes 3 years to get started... I should look into it... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80006240 Actually my weeds are coming up nicely. I planted some dill because I like to make pickles and it's expensive to buy at the store. I actually had to rip some of them out today because I had too many in one spot. |
