No reason was given . Unusually when it’s nation wide it’s due to a network software upgrade that went bad or a cyber attack .

They are phasing out 1900 MHz on 2G and 3G networks but that isn’t planned until early June .

Very weird. My phone wont make a call but ive got a US phone which connects to rogers and can call my canadian phone... seems deliberate towards canadian customers.

I was at a U-Haul outlet in eastern Ontario yesterday. Their entire system was down, phones too. Not just in that outlet, but across the whole of Canada. The guy said that had never happened before.

Rogers, Fido wireless customers affected by countrywide outage

TORONTO -- Many Rogers and Fido wireless customers are being impacted by a countrywide cellular service outage and have been left unable to make calls, send text message or use mobile data.
"Some wireless customers are experiencing an intermittent service interruption for wireless voice and data services. Our team is working quickly to restore services as soon as possible," Rogers said from its @RogersHelps customer care Twitter account. "We apologize for the inconvenience and will continue to provide regular updates."

School boards, such as the Durham Catholic District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board in Ontario, have also said school-issued iPads and hotspot devices will not be able to connect.
The Rogers outage is also impacting fire services. Toronto city councilor Kristyn Wong-Tam tweeted that the remote fire alarm monitoring systems in approximately 850 City of Toronto-owned buildings were down.

More like no 911 service, communication, data or roaming.

This is still ongoing and concerning.

Thank God I have my landline.

My cell shows no IMEI, phone number and will not allow 911 calls

(I tried as a test, then immediately called the local non-emergency resource line from my landline to report that I *accidentally* dialed 911 from my cell, and that there was no emergency.

They were surprisingly forgiving and inquiring as to my phone details.
Apparently even their own workers, nurses and people actually needing emergencies can't call 911 from their cellphones.. which is unusual since their is no option to roam or bounce to another tower..

Americans please keep in mind that many Canadians do not have landlines, Ontario is currently in a strict stay at home order making it impossible to access local phones in businesses, offices or the closed schools and libraries.

Keep in mind that this is tax season, and many government agencies are using cell phones, working from home.

It's been nearly 8 hours now and no restoration.

I’ve been in the Canadian telecommunications industry now for 15 years and rarely does a national outage last this long . My assumption is that it was a cyber attack .

Maybe Bell cyber attacked Rogers.

I am using home phone (cellular technology) and cell; so both phones down.

You poor thing.
However someone of us happen to use their services for work etc.
Though you wouldn't know as you seem to have all the time in the world to frolic outside.

At least Bell is still up. So service is not totally out.

Damn. Successful ransomware attacks being able to happen are entirely the fault of their IT staff which needs fired.

We have had four remote locations and even multiple file servers 'ransomed' by an infected PC.

It takes me about twenty minutes to unransome everything and send a 'F*CK YOU' to the ransomers. Then quickly eliminate the ability of the malware payload to run on our networks and WAN.

These are the cases where I truly wish a missile strike was used to eradicate the perpetrators home and perhaps if it was in a Nigerian village, leave a one thousand foot crater around it as an example.

This is how wars were won when men were men. Now we have girly men and NPC's more worried about their video games, their gay apparel, and their 'man' buns.
