Quoting: InMyDreams I get them all the time. The only reason I answer is because it might indeed be someone across the street or in the neighborhood. I saw AAA on the caller ID yesterday, and I was not going to answer it, but i did. It was AAA. |

Otherwise, they can kiss my ass. Anonymous Coward User ID: 16120764 United States 02/23/2021 03:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I actually have a little insight here. POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) was not built with security in mind. It's very possible to use a lineman's handset or grey box today. There's a very famous case of John Draper who used recordings of church organs and toy whistles from Cap'n Crunch cereal boxes as well as other things to take advantage of insecure telephone systems that gave access based on sounds heard over the phone line. If you're interested in this, look up phone phreaking. Since there is very little security on the POTS network, it was obviously abused. Over the years, various systems have been devised to abuse the system 'better'. By that, I mean mostly scammers trying to increase the number of potential victims they can reach. This includes using automated dialers, spoofing (faking the caller ID information), 'neighbor spoofing' (faking caller ID with rotating numbers in the same area code), etc. Neighbor spoofing is incredibly annoying as you can't easily tell if this is a new customer calling your business or a spam call. Advancement of technology has made it easier and cheaper for anyone around the world to use VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services like Skype that give access to the telephone network based on a free email address obtained on a free public wifi. Add in the complexity of international borders, lax security, and the low level of the crime severity and it extraordinarily difficult to get resources to find the culprits. The FCC has been working on the STIR/SHAKEN protocols to add some security to the phone network. Read more on their website here: [link to www.fcc.gov (secure)] Like many other things the government does, this will be too little, too late. Like many other security solutions, it's going REALLY REALLY slowly and this solution will quickly be broken or circumvented. Technology will quickly leave government enforcement efforts in the dust. One last note, for the calls that have no one on the other line, these are sometimes systems set to recognize numbers that answer (as opposed to disconnected lines, fax numbers, etc.) as targets for an actual call. More often, these are just poorly setup automated calling systems. The programmer that setup the autodialer code just sucks -- they called you but didn't play any recording or didn't wait for a scammer to become available before they started calling the next number. |

Go to Settings-Phone and select “Silence Unknown Callers. This sends any calls from numbers not in your phone book directly to Voicemail and the call will show up on your caller ID. No ring and if they are legit, they will leave a VM. |
