Does anyone remember chasing the mosquito man's truck?
I do....how are we still living? It was DDT!

In the late 1940s, and into the 1950s and 1960s, trucks would drive through the streets spraying the pesticide, leaving a thick fog behind.

I probably won't get many responses here. I'm assuming GLP has very few people on this site who grew up in the 40's, 50's and 60's.

Being sprayed outside for mosquitoes? I don't remember that.

I do remember malathion being sold for use on lawns and trees. We bought it.

Better spray techniques. Comes from the sky, more areas sprayed.

Gotta love mosquito abatement.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. I'm assuming this spraying went on throughout the United States?

I never gave the mosquito trucks a thought until someone posted a thread today about an EPA approved spray to be used on trains and other indoor facilities for the virus.

Some people are opposed to it. We've certainly learned a lot about chemicals since my childhood.

I'm in NJ. Last summer I had mosquito bites THROUGH my clothing! Up and down my legs! Just from walking or working in my backyard. The only "standing water" I have is water in a large bowl on my patio for the birds. I purchased a chemical and now I'm afraid to use it. lol

I'd hop on my bike and chase the truck every chance I got.

The fog was awesome and I have a fond memory of the smell.

BTW, DDT has approximately the same acute toxicity as aspirin, caffeine and Tylenol....

Ahhhh....to enjoy a childhood with no cares or the fears kids are subject to today.

I think the only fear I had growing up was those Russian bombs that were supposed to be dropped on our cities. The newspapers said the radiation effects would be devastating if we didn't have an underground fallout shelter in our backyards.

On our drive to my grandfather's house, about 10 miles away from our home, we would pass a house that was said to have an underground fallout shelter. I would always look at that house and think how lucky they were.....that they must have been so wealthy and they would be saved when those Russian bombs dropped. lol

Yes, rode bikes thru the toxic cloud. Those trucks drove at low speed through streets full of children at play, without a second thought.

That link actually says it doesn't harm humans (not so great for insects and birds though). And it claims not killing disease-carrying insects is worse.

These days we have Bill Gates developing GMO mosquitoes, and possibly creating super bugs in the process.

I remember them in Shreveport Louisiana when I was a little kid in the mid 80s.

My mom wouldn't let me chase them though. As soon as she heard it we had to come inside and close all of the windows lol

I know! I doubt if there was a way to announce their arrival to communities. They just appeared, and if you were lucky enough to playing outside, it was exciting. lol

50s-60s The kids called the truck “the fogman” All the little boys would run through the cloud of ddt screaming as if in an amusement park. As the truck approached, word would spread. Kids would bolt out and run in it. Most of us were in shorts and shirtless. I grew up in Louisiana. We were exposed to a lot of shit. I am seventy and still kicking
