"Duct Tape" - has anybody ever taped up a duct or seen a duct which was constructed using "duct tape"?
"Duct Tape" - has anybody ever taped up a duct or seen a duct which was constructed using "duct tape"? Who would design a steel air duct where the pieces are taped together with special tape? A steel duct, they are going to use screws or bolts to hold the pieces together. Not tape. would a real engineer design a duct which tapes together?

it is called "duck tape" because it is made out of "duck cloth"!

Yes! I have.

while we're on the topic

can you use a 6 inch flexible duct on a 5 inch duct connection?

I thought it was duck tape. All these years I have been taping up ducks. Now you say it is for mechanical heating stuff?

It's duck tape, and meant to bundle ducks together for shipment.

Until foil tape came out everyone used duct tape.

Yes. It's used all the time in the industry. Especially on the flexible duct.

At one time it was called 100 mile an hour tape. It was to "field expedient fix" micro tears in rotor blades and such wayy back in the day.

They don't have tape in Australia. They barely just started using the wheel.

Yes, I have too. We have a gap in one of our ducts that is covered in duct tape that holds well. Our furnace even has duct tape on it to cover some gapping around the sides. The hose extending from the back of the dryer also has duct tape over it. It holds well and it works.

I run the numbers and specs then do empirical test and prototypes beating the hell out of them.

Duct taped get gummy and fall apart at around 120 degrees.

For heat duct applications you need 3m 3380 range -40 to 260°f.

3m 3243 works nicely upto 425°f. It is mostly aluminum with acrylic bond. Heat sinks nicely.

For flues you need 3M high temp flue tape range upto 600°f.
This will fail when you over fire the flue.

For years as an underground miner, we used many many rolls of duct tape to seal any leaks in canvas or even metal air ducts. The air had to be forced to the end of each mine drift to keep us healthy, and was blown undergrown by huge fans, then distributed by smaller fans and thousands of feet of hanging air ducts. The tape was only used to repair leaks, not for fresh ducting.

Many a time growing cannabis. Needed it for intakes and outflows using mylar tubes, that cracked. Haul out the duct tape! Same goes with older and wonky fans...duct tape them down and hold their structure together.

I was in the sheet metal union and had to use that crap on the construction site because those that sat in the office and 'knew better' said so.

Duct tape does not stick to (sheet metal) ducts!

I wasted so much time taping and retaping and rereretaping that bullshit to know. it peels right up.

Duct tape is essential in any emergency kit. Emergency wound closure material, fire starter, build a shelter, fix shoes, and tape ducts. Why wouldn't you have this in your house? I have like 10 rolls in the garage.

Duct tape was first invented by a female factory worker during World War II. It was originally called 'duck' tape because it was made out of a cotton duck fabric and it repelled water like a duck's back.

you should use a minimum of two wraps of duckt tape when sealing ducts

I go like a madmen and spin that shit around like 10 times for a nice tight seal, over time the duckt tape fails

epiclol so you got the job of "duct taper"? it's clear that the steel ducts bolt together, they sure don't need pieces of tape stuck onto them! of course the tape is gonna fall off a piece of sheet steel, unless you fiberglass it on or something mad like that!

I just finished sealing a duct, maybe 20 minutes ago. Used silicone AFTER using three sheet metal screws at the joint.
