I would tell you to take ANY white collar job to get a foot in the door, plan on working your way up. You don’t hear much about that anymore. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77151235 Or...move someplace where you can have a life on $12 an hour. Someplace with $200,000 houses in safe neighborhoods. And just live a life. There’s a lot to be said for that—you don’t need to be rich to be happy, just have enough an a little extra. Right, this precisely. I have college degrees. But I've switched organizations, found new decent jobs, switched industries often, precisely because I needed an opportunity or more pay and I applied like a MADMAN to numerous orgs and opportunities. Similarly, people do need to learn to network. Frankly, that's half of what college is especially graduate school. Good ol' boys clubs. But, if someone does apply like mad to many different opportunities that have professional potential, in decent organizations, eventually something will click. It can take 6 months to a year. You may have to be willing to move too. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79906718 United States 01/24/2021 03:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Going to college has the biggest rip-off ever. My entire Young Life in school I was told make something of yourself and go to college. So I ended up going to college and the best job I've ever had after graduating is $12 an hour. Going to college is useless and I feel sorry for all the Schmucks that are graduating they have no idea what is coming to them. Quoting: Stuka888 I've done everything possible to better my life and that is going nowhere. You bash people for making minimum wage and being poor. Well I've been to college and I am still poor. First of all, I can tell you that going to college is ONLY for those who know they need a college degree to do what they truly WANT to do. If you didn't know what you wanted to do/study, then you had no business going to college. There are plenty of people who make a great living doing what they are good at, or what they are trained to do. Not all training requires a college degree. That said, however, I will admit that I have ALWAYS been able to get a job BECAUSE of my degree. Of course, my degree is in education, so there are always places looking for teachers, so I never went without a job. Maybe not the one I wanted - in the location I wanted - or for the pay I wanted - but I WORKED. All my life. Where ever we lived, I was able to find work while others I knew pounded the pavement with no success (including spouse, sometimes). Knowing what you are good at, or what you have a passion for helps you get the kind of job you love...and SHOULD be the direction to help you get the proper degree. It has been said, "Find a way to make a living doing what you love, and you'll never work again." Finally, the old saying? "Cream always rises to the top?" Yeah. It's true. If you are not able to "rise" higher in your job or company, then I suspect YOU have a shitty attitude or some other weakness the bosses sense. Try working on those. |

Well, as you know though education at least in the US usually requires a bachelors in education. Many states require a masters degree for secondary or higher. But to the point of the op too, there is a big difference between getting a liberal arts degree versus a finance, engineering, nursing, or even education licensure degree. The former you will have to really show yourself to be highly motivated and capable to get ahead. But, you can. It's just not really due to the degree. Some organizations do require though a college degree, whatever it may be. For the practical degrees, the latter group, going to college absolutely makes it easier to get a decent job out of college. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79906718 United States 01/24/2021 03:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I regret teaching at a college. Daily, crippling regret. At my age, though, I have no idea what else to do to earn a living. Who wants to hire a 60 year old and pay them a living wage? I hate my job. What I teavh is useless, and the kids I teach are mostly whiny privileged libtards who have no idea how to think for themselves. Yeah. Quoting: Bee Girl Tell them the truth You might feel better You just might save them from themselves You can't "tell them the truth." I teach at a college, too, and the little whiney bitches will just CRY to Mommy and Daddy about you being a BAAAD TEACHER and then someone writes up bad reviews of you (go back and read the post that says so, it's true!) and then you gotta toe the line and watch your P's and Q's for how long till everyone forgets about the whiney baby who got 5 friends to write a baaaad review on you cause you FAILED their sorry ass when they didn't even belong in college! Today, teaching at ANY age is useless, cause we've created a society who doesn't want to invest in ANYTHING. They just want to sit around like little baby birds and wait for it to just drop into their mouths. Kids today DO NOT KNOW HOW TO THINK for themselves. They've almost been brainwashed NOT to have an original thought. Makes it hard to "teach," when all they want is for you to toss it over to them so they can sop it up. I understand, ac0148, but I don't HATE my job. I get a couple each semester who are listening, who LEARN and hear what I have to tell them, and I just make it about them. I feel like, "Screw the others. Life will eventually teach them the lessons I couldn't." Like YOUR life, and prepare for your retirement. Then be ready to enjoy it once you can disengage. |

I think different thoughts having been to college. I'm not the same person. I saved some money before going, and took time (a few years) to decide what I wanted to study before taking the plunge. Having some money laid aside for it was very helpful. I was older than my classmates too, so I was more mature...and I wasn't worried about anything except doing a good job and getting good grades. I won a few scholarships after my first year, and I was only a mediocre student in high school. I got up in the morning, excited to learn and had deep interest in what I was learning. It was so much better than going to work. I would have loved to become a professional student. Extra time I had, I went to the library and studied some subjects on my own. I worked ahead in my books, did additional reading...I was paying for this, so I wanted to get the most out of it. I wasn't disappointed. |
