Re: Anyone remember the "Be" Operating System (BeOS) ??
There are apparently some Easter Eggs hidden in this OS, as I quickly realized.

Not long after booting for the first time, I noticed an app_server thread with a rather curious name:

DMT is here for you, eventually

(I attempted to upload a screenshot, but it was not approved :)

eraser

Someone programming this operating system is in the know...

The funny part about this was that the thread also has "urgent display priority" as an added joke.

Being no stranger to that chemical, myself, I had a huge grin when I saw that message on screen...

DMT

I definitely have to make some sort of screencast for this OS. :)

I've been beating it to fucking hell and back, and it just keeps taking more!

Having a decent version of QT and a lot of excellent KDE apps available really makes this OS many orders of magnitude more usable than the previous release (which was some years ago.) Unfortunately, most who have previously tried Haiku will have no doubt experienced that version..

HAIKU PRETTY MUCH FUCKING ROCKS NOW

Free PC O/S?
I found one the other day;
It's name is Haiku.

I haven't had any real "fun" with an operating system in at least 20 years, and I really didn't expect it to be this one.

So what's up with this Haiku... is it in the fact the old BeOS ressuscitated and given an upgrade?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79409689

For the most part, yes.

The 32-bit release supports legacy BeOS R5 code (but uses an old GCC2 compiler.)

The 64-bit release uses a newer compiler platform at the expense of losing the backward compatibility.

The was I feel about that is basically:

TBC-whocares

Not many need the legacy support. Let the old code die, because now we have something shaping up to be substantial. (There are also PowerPC, Sparc, and ARM targets, so it isn't just Intel.)

There wasn't a major release of the OS in years until they dropped the recent Beta(s) and started doing nightly builds again. Someone's been busy..
 Quoting: AkashicRecord®

Sounds good.

So what are you losing if you use the 64-bit version? The ability to play old games, use old browsers, that sort of stuff? Might there be anything important there?

VIDEO DRIVERS

...that is the primary issue (for now) if you are trying out Haiku. I kind of wish the Dev team would just use their fail-safe VESA video driver on first boot (at least) and then give the user an option to keep it that way, or probe / test the display for a suitable driver (if any) and continue from there.

Right now you'll probably need to hold Shift and go into the boot options and select the fail-safe video driver. After install, you have to uncomment a specific configuration line in a startup settings file to keep this enabled, and this is not good for a "dumb" user or newbie.. This whole issue could be rectified a lot better in many ways.

It's all (mostly) documented on their web page, which is excellent by the way, so make sure you at least have a passing glance at the installation guide, because it also has a lot of troubleshooting info.
 Quoting: AkashicRecord®

That's some funny shit... video drivers were needed to play a game, or use software drivers to see what was was on screen, differentiated by sight. hf
 Quoting: Seeker of Truth

Yeah, the installation and running on "newish" hardware can be a pain. That's why I wish the VESA driver was default. It works pretty damn good for the time being. But, this is a beta, and targeting new hardware is obviously difficult...i mean hell, these guys only have about a $10K yearly goal for donations...

I wouldn't peg Haiku as a gaming OS by any means, but there is a lot there lurking in the shadows.

For retro gaming, it is actually quite complete. You can essentially play any classsic console, arcade, or DOS game if you like.

:fuckyeah:

So, I timed the Haiku boot sequence on this junker machine and it took about 30 seconds in total. An additional 10 seconds or so for power on self tests and BIOS messages, etc., so that's not too bad... (And I have a lot of shit already installed on this thing.)

I tried timing the shutdown time from pressing the Power button, but it was too fast I couldn't actually clock the fucking thing. (It took less than one second.)

If you compare it with Windows, this is nothing less than spectacular.

Wait a moment... what did I say? If I shut down Windows by pressing the power button, in fact it's very much like what you are saying for Haiku. Maybe not exactly as fast, but close.

That might be a sleep mode though. And I wasn't holding down the button, just pressing it as fast as I could and still try to start / stop a stopwatch timer.

Mine was a full shutdown to power off. Cache flushing, app closing(s), everything.

It might take more than a second at times, but it is still pretty insane to see.

I guess an operating system should always be this way.

Yeah I got a little sidetracked.

WINE has come up over the years and I think the general consensus is that it would be maddeningly difficult to port, and would come with a lot of baggage.

IsComputerOn()

IsComputerOnFire()

Actual OS function calls.

But, yeah. Sony, Microsoft, likely Apple, actively worked to kill Be, Inc. Just like the Amiga.

It goes a lot deeper, of course. JLG humiliated BG on Computer Chronicles Quiz Bowl. EVERYONE laughed at Gates, not in a good way.

M$ even used BeIA's 'Stinger' code name for their early phone attempt.

We could be living in a much different world right now.

Fetishists should watch the fictional 'Halt and Catch Fire'. Pirate it if you hate Netflix.

Another realm of complete bad-assery is Newtek. Never went public, but had their Video Toaster in pretty much every cable company studio in the country.

What is Haiku's support of USB sound devices like? It would be fun to try and compile some ham radio utils if that's not a problem.

This is something that I'm currently looking at.

My old Line 6 Toneport UX2 didn't seem to be recognized, but I didn't spend much time investigating it.

I haven't tested my Zoom H2 recorder via USB yet.

There were issues with USB3 in Haiku but there has been a lot of work on that.

I think there are ham radio apps in the Haiku Depot.

edit: yep, there's a ham radio backend control rig named "hamlib" that is already there.

Actually, the day I handed in my resignation they took my terminal away and handed me several change orders, all on punch cards, because I was the last guy there who could do it. I think that's awesome that you used it for a while. I think you'll appreciate some of the newer changes in there.

Post your thoughts if you get it up and running again. Most people will have the easiest time running it virtual, but you seem to know your chops :)

They need to iron out the install process a bit, as it's a little too...manual...at this point seeing as that you need to create an appropriate partition (like GPT) and then a BFS file system, and then format it and you can finally install. I feel a few of those steps could be simplified a bit for newbies...or at least offer "simple" and "advanced" install modes...something like that. At least the installation only takes a few seconds...literally.

I guess they play it safe that way so that people don't accidentally nuke their old OS by accident. chuckle

So, I had a wild hair on my ass and thought that since YouTube had some issues, surely other sites would share the same fate..

A: Naked women!

Needless to say that I was surprised that one of the most popular "adult" sites out there actually fared better than YouTube in terms of browser compatibility. rofl lmao

Re: Anyone remember the "Be" Operating System (BeOS) ??
Well, there was a recent update to the Otter web browser for Haiku, and the WebKit as well, I think, and damn was it a serious update.

It now handles YouTube (plus HD and fullscreening) much better than anything else. Actually, I think it might be the only browser now that can do it. Seeking / scrubbing and the popup controls all work, which was a problem with the default (NetPositive) browser. There's even a built-in YouTube video downloader.

This is HUGE!
