Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 66594553 United States 08/21/2020 04:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The big red flag is the trajectory not being a straight line. Objects in orbit, be it satellites or space junk, only follow a rectilinear path due to inertia. To change direction, there must be lateral forces applied (any kind of thrust). Satellites, as far as i know, have small thrusters just enough to make small corrections to their orbits, not to make big maneuvers like You described. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79033813 That's exactly what I'm saying. My thought that night was that first, meteors were entering the atmosphere on a trajectory directly at our location. If you think about a shooting star, if it came right at you, it would look like a bright light, like a start, flashing. You wouldn't see its trajectory, it wouldn't zip across the sky. I discarded this idea, as eventually there were just too many of them. There'd have to be way too many meteors coming from all over the sky, directly at our location. That's just too improbable. We were seeing other shooting stars that night, as it was on the tail end of the Perseid meteor shower, but there would be about three times the amount of shooting stars heading directly at us from all directions for each normal meteorite that we saw shooting randomly across the sky. So then I was thinking these were starlink. I don't know anything about starlink, but I read a thread here about them, I don't know how long ago, maybe a month or more. What we were seeing was so weird, but I'd heard about problems for astronomers because of starlink satellites flashing in the night sky. I just assumed then, that this was starlink, because Starlink is new, and I'd never seen this before. And starlink causes flashes, and we were seeing flashes. So that night, I was pretty sure this was starlink. Then, a couple days later, I wanted to confirm this, so was looking on youtube for video of this behavior we saw, and I couldn't find anything like it. I assumed I wasn't searching well, or youtube has so messed up their search algo trying to present "consumery" monetized content that I couldn't find the right vids. So, I thought about Dr. Astromut, our resident Astronomer, and expert on all things space, so I posted here hoping to get his attention. I figured everyone would be like, "That's Starlink, you idiot, everyone knows that." You know, with typical GLP courtesy ;) but that's not what it seems is happening. So this remains unexplained. For the record, I don't think this is aliens, we didn't see anything spectacular, anything big, anything moving irrationally. I also don't think this is a natural phenomenon, as I would have seen it previously. I fully expect this to be man made in some way. But, and this might be the part that is MORE improbable than aliens, lol, as this would imply that we (humans) have craft with some pretty crazy capabilities in space. If these are reflections off of craft, those craft would have the ability to move around, not in orbit, completely under their own power. I'm not familiar with anything that can do that. I know we (US) had that mini spaceshuttle craft thing, and I think that could move around, but still while in an orbit. Maybe it has greater capabilities? Or maybe we (humans) have newer craft. That's the most likely option I can think of! |

Visually, it looked different, but I assume that is because this was filmed, and through a telescope. What we saw, I THINK lasted just a little longer than these flashes. And seemed more demonstrable. |

I think it might be related to the coming shit storm Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31259181 I’m hoping this thread takes off. What we have here seems to be a new or at least recently dormant phenomena. I’m not an expert by any means, but i’ve personally logged countless nights staring at the sky. Now, in the past month, I’ve had two similar “what the hell was that” moments in my viewings that I’ve never had before this season. Sounds like i’m Not alone in that. Watch the skies when you can. Report back. |

Report back. What did you see? And yes, the stuff we were seeing wasn't subtle, wasn't occult, it was right up there for everyone to see. I think most people live under light pollution, so never really see the real sky. I know I do. I've been doing all my gardening very late at night, and I've been using Jupiter and Saturn as a clock, to know how screwed I'm going to be in the morning. Like if Jupiter and Saturn have set, I'm gonna be screwed. But we can't see all that many stars here. I think you'd have to live out in the country to see this. If there is anyone in my state with a giant portable ccd adapted telescope, hit me up, I can take you to the exact place where we saw this. It'd be a bit of a drive, but I'd love to capture footage of this to share. I don't have any gear, just an older now cannon dslr that can do 1080P. |
ProfessorDweeb User ID: 79177071 United States 08/21/2020 11:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | About a month ago I saw what I presumed was a tumbling satellite. It didn’t seem to have a set amount of time between winks. It moved seemingly steadily across the sky, and would pulse somewhat randomly, each time within 8 seconds of the last. I inquired with detective internet and it was suggested that it was a tumbling satellite. The second experience i’ve already somewhat detailed in the last post of the first page of this thread. I feel it is similar to what you detailed in your OP. Both seen in different parts of the north east. Enough light pollution to make the Milky Way JUST noticeable. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 66594553 United States 08/22/2020 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I read your entire post. I too have seen the same phenomenon and only recently. Here is my brief documentation from another thread last week. Quoting: ProfessorDweeb 79177071 I too saw some strange things tonight. One was sky flashes, likely heat lightning. (No clouds in sight, butThere was a storm about 150 miles away ) Quoting: ProfessorDweeb 79185636 Secondly, I saw a series of localized flashes in the same spot spaced about maybe 5-7 seconds apart. I first saw a pinpoint flash in my periferal and shifted my focus to the spot. I saw a bright blaze wink out. No tail. I assumed I was lucky enough to see one of those “coming right at you” meteors. Even let out a awe struck “wow”.Then it happened again... again.... again.... again.... again... again in the same spot. 1 of the top 3 most interesting things i’ve Seen in the sky. Whoa, I missed this post somehow, I guess as the thread wrapped pages. Very similar to what we saw, but the flashes were way more infrequent, and less regular. Very interesting that other people are potentially seeing the same thing, but no one knows what it is. |

My heart started racing cause it will just sit there and flash every 15 to 30sec. then just stop. 30min or so how long it went on .12am to 3am are times I have seen it. Towards Big Dipper. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72222427 What kind of debris, rocks? Rural Alberta, have been seeing this for weeks and its new because I have been looking out my back east window for a while before bed for several years, thought it was clouds and the screen but the stars appear steady. |
