GLPers homeschooling Teach Your Children Well
Starting this thread for all the parents with kids who will be homeschooling over the next few weeks, months, years...who knows?

My intent here is to create a thread you can refer back to like Pooka’s practical prepping even if poor.

Hopefully you have been following your child’s progress in school and have some idea of what they have been learning in school: what they have been bringing home for homework is a good start.

First take a look at the school’s website and the district where you live: there should be links to websites that you can access for information as to expectations for each grade level and links to your state’s standards and objectives in each subject area.

Google STEM education and look for stuff by age of child,

For Goodness sake, teach your child cursive handwriting and spelling, since most schools won’t, there are a few handwriting generators for free online, I.e. you type what you want and it makes a page to print and practice (will look for link)

There are also websites with reading selections at different grade levels for free. I will come back and post.

Get a keyboard like a piano or a guitar or other instrument and print out some music to go with it.

Make your child read aloud to you (especially 8 yrs or younger) every day using text they can read (not too hard). Cannot over stress how important it is for you to read to them a lot. Find classics like Charlotte’s Web; Jean Fritz wrote a lot of good patriotic books for like 3rd grade.
Older students read Johnny Tremain (historical fiction of Revolutionary War every patriot should read—adults too).

I will post more suggestions and encourage other parents and/or teachers to add to this.

Thank you. More resources, please. I was teaching English for Second Language Learners. They loved crosswords, word games. Too many sites are pay sites, or pay after a month, and then you forget to cancel, or can't figure out how to cancel. I am a volunteer. I am teaching Christian children Christian values.

Please be careful of your books. There's a lot of liberal dribble leaking into the books even at a very early age.
There are early learning books sold at Sam's that have always been fine. They are being bundled and sold with books full of things like married men with babies as examples of families. Yes, two married gay men with babies is a family, but I mean there are NO traditional Christian family shown. A lot of the pictures will be interracial, or LGBT, that sort of thing, just with a lot of the emphasis being on the left little pet groups. I'm talking books for four year olds.

I see a lot of about to be released books, and a lot of scholastic books are now very left liberal leaning. Now I am starting to see it with other publishers with Early learning books too.

I mention it because parents need to know. It seems to me like it's very intentional propaganda being pushed from a very young age by the print media.

I homeschooled my child, and I used an eclectic method that leaned heavily towards classical education. My son is now fully grown and a great thinker.

How do you teach a kid with add?
My grand son's attention span is awful.
Very frustrating.

For American History, we used Joy Hakim The story of US, and she also has an excellent science series.
'Liberty Kids' is a good cartoon.

There was a site where I would buy homeschool materials from but I can't remember it, sorry.
In retrospect the best thing that I bought were the vocabulary packets and the Lapbook kits.

When my son got older I worried less about curriculum and just let him read everything he wanted to. As long as he did some math, I was happy as long as I saw him reading and doing things to increase his skill level at something useful.

I think it's also important that as soon as you start to homeschool your child, you figure out what their best learning style is. My child is visual and a very physical learner. He could not sit still and listen to anyone, but I would let him play with Legos while I read to him and he would remember every word I said. We had many lessons when he was on the sofa with his butt in the air bicycling his legs. We used a lot of manipulative materials with math.

He settled down in time but still needs a lot of activity to stay grounded. Now he gets up early for the gym and wears himself out on a punching bag every morning at 5 am. Ha

I found Dr Amen books very helpful. One of the books suggested peanut butter as a snack to help a kid focus, and it works so well for him- to this day.

There's an excellent show that's probably on YouTube from the UK called Maths Mansion.

There are what I call 'Little math facts' that kids just have to memorize.
The old fashioned number line is a great way to teach concepts.

Speed drills on really simple math, addition and subtraction and of course multiplication tables are very helpful so that they have those little facts down before you proceed to higher level math. Or 4*9, 6+7

Include games anytime you can to increase their speed with those little math facts like Pyramid Solitaire.

Meet the child where they are at. If you've got a child struggling with say third grade math and you realize that they don't have their little math facts down yet, get them up to speed before you touch anything else. The drills can be fun.

I absolutely did not spend that much time on math compared to what they do in school, but my son can run rings around his 'straight A/Dean's List' cousin in everyday practical math. (Like being able to calculate a price with sales tax before you get to the register for an item that's on sale at a certain percent off in your head. My son does it effortlessly, but his cousin simply cannot do it, if he can remember what the sales tax rate is at all.)

We're gonna learn to grow thyme, then learn to make an essential oil from it, then learn to dilute it and make homemade disinfectant spray.

Links to download pdf's containing everything a child typically learns in each grade. Completely awesome if you want to build your own lesson plans, which I don't really want to do, but it's looking like I'm going to have to.

I was finally able to get my kids registered for homeschool. I was going to use all in one homeschool site, but neither of my kids are liking it at all. So I came looking for this thread to see what you guys had already posted.

Glad to hear you got the school thing sorted.

I am blessed that Zeph is young enough that workbooks are easy to come by..... I even found two Disney ones because FTW, we need cute.

And I soooooo appreciate Iowa.... don’t need lesson plans. And school isn’t compulsory until 6.... so for six more months I don’t have to keep track of stuff.

We will be 3/5 through second grade before that! Wooohoooo. But I saved and dated all his workbook pages.... so eh.

Apple does not fall far from the tree.

Obviously no matter the education

You should except Jesus Christ as Your Savior and Bow, begging forgiveness.

You have been on a dark path and will continue until you ask Jesus into your life.

Clevercreator should be teaching her kid about the teachings of Jesus Christ.

If you are not going to save yourself, save your kid.
