Last month, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission held a hearing on the United States’ growing reliance on China's pharmaceutical products. The topic reminded me of a spirited discussion described in Bob Woodward’s book, Fear: Trump in the White House. In the discussion, Gary Cohn, then chief economic advisor to President Trump, argued against a trade war with China by invoking a Department of Commerce study that found that 97 percent of all antibiotics in the United States came from China. “If you’re the Chinese and you want to really just destroy us, just stop sending us antibiotics,” he said.

China still needs an economy and exports.. And those pharmaceuticals exported to America are not the same ones used to treat corona virus. So they can still make and export them.

for example. anti depression meds are not going to be used to treat corona virus..

Well that could be so, BUT even little Croatia can now sell antibiotics. China isn't the whole source of the worlds medicines. It's probably super cheap so big pharma makes a killing.

i'm 55 never taken any prescription drugs mother is 79 she has never had a prescription drug .. i guarentee if she go to doctor today she'd have 6 or ten bottles to juggle like most elderly americans.

Where is all the money going for the high drug prices if it is made by Chinese Slave Labor ?

Most of the leading pharmaceutical companies are headquartered in the USA/Canada/Northern Europe, so I'm guessing that these large percentages (97% and 80%) are generic drugs that may come from China or India.

If those numbers are true, then I see a HUGE opportunity for Trump.

Encourage, with tax breaks and incentives and less red tape, new (and existing) generic drug manufacturers to build/expand production facilities here in the USA.

antibiotics are produced from blue mold that grows on bread.

you could leave a 25 cent loaf of bread out for a week and have enough penicillin for a whole city, antibiotics should be free. They basically were for awhile, at Kroger, Walmart with the $2 and $2 prescriptions, but of course they find ways to upsell you.

A report in the New York Times (yea, a leftist slimepit, but even broken clocks give the correct time twice a day) several years ago found that most pharmaceuticals worked because of the placebo effect, not anything beyond that. Or mind over matter.

But all the dollars rolling around Big Pharma and the Obamas/Hillarys/Bills/Bidens/McCains/Romneys of the system cackle, "we came, we saw, you got ripped off."
