Legality of shooting down drone
Question:
A coworker of mine has recently had a problem with some sort of voyeurist hovering a drone outside of his windows.
He's got a wife and a teenage daughter this 'drone' is interested in.
His neighbors too. Happens every weekend for about a month.

They think it may be a another student in his daughter's highschool, but are not certain. His neighbors have looked around for the operator but have been unsuccessful.

I told him (and he agrees) that the next time this happens, he go outside with his duck gun and shoot it down with a load of turkeyshot, recover the drone, and call the cops.

I'm pretty sure this is legal to do: He and his neighbors are outside of city limits. He (or his neighbors) will be shooting it over their private property.

What does GLP think?

Possibly a perv cop?
The drone is described as a high-end hobbyist drone. The cops aren't looking for marijuana, as it's legal here in Oregon.
The drone is interested in girls and women, and leaves when it's discovered. Only to show up a day or week later.

If it's some perv cop's drone, I wonder if they would just take the wreckage and "not find" the operator.

If it is being used for an official investigation, wonder what kind of trouble the citizens get in for shooting it down?

Do not call the police, period.

Let the operator call the police and explain how he was flying his drone on someone else's property.

Sling shot and shoot ice cubes at it. Don't use a firearm.

Firearms are easier and faster.
Coworker is outside of city limits, where it's legal to discharge them. Obviously he is a legal firearm owner too. (against a drone is the question)

Interesting concept.
Drone wouldn't be badly damaged, and could be re-frequencied (whatever it's called) and used as your own.

Coworker said this is a high end hobbyist drone. I think they cost $2-3K.

The illegality you should be concerned with is discharging a firearm for a non-defense purpose in the city limits. Considering that, the last thing I would do is tell the cops you shot your shotgun straight up in the air in the city.

It doesn't matter what we think brosef. Your buddy needs to call the cops and ask them himself, while recording the conversation if they give him a go-ahead.

Don't really know his neighbors.
But I've been to his place, and the homes are about 100 yards apart. Definitely rural; outside of city limits.
He occasionally shoots on his property and has shot quail on it too.

I think he's mostly worried about being taken to small claims court for destroying some perv's toy.

I've shot down two hovering near my windows.

The funny thing is, all these drones have cameras, so they know I shot them, yet they didn't dare call the cops. Imagine that.

I don't know if it was the same person twice, or two different people. As soon as I came out with the rifle, though, they tried to get height first, then move laterally.

Too slow, lol.

That is just nonsense in the minds of people with Ego. They think the drone flying nearby is trying to film them.
