California to Give Gun Owners New 90-Day Window to Register ‘Assault Weapons’

The state of California has agreed in a settlement to provide another 90-day window to allow gun owners to register their legally owned “assault weapons.”

Gun-rights groups argued in a lawsuit that the state’s registration website was down for much of the week prior to the previous deadline, which put thousands of gun owners in legal jeopardy. Gun owners who tried but failed to register their “bullet button” semi-automatic rifles due to technical difficulties will not be prosecuted for missing the previous July 1, 2018, deadline, according to the settlement.

Gun Records Restoration and Preservation Act - A Threat To Privacy

The gun grabbing circus lead by Nanny Bloomberg’s Moms Demand Action, Everytown, Giffords, Brady United (Handgun Control Inc.), etc. would just love to see every protection for responsible gun owners abolished.

Coming from none other than Senator Bob Menendez, from the freedom crushing land of New Jersey, is S. 974: Gun Records Restoration and Preservation Act.

The bill’s description is a little misleading, “To repeal certain impediments to the administration of the firearms laws.” If you start to dig through what on earth this is or might be all about, you’ll be greeted by a nice pile of legalese gobbledygook, but the intent is clear; to destroy the privacy protections for gun owners built into current law and to lay the groundwork for a national gun registry.

The Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund is spending half a million dollars in key states on TV and digital ads featuring cops and gun owners voicing support for universal background checks.


Many Americans, for example, strongly oppose universal background checks if they’re forced to go to an FFL and pay a transfer fee every time they went to lend or sell a firearm to a friend, neighbor, or extended family member.

Many Americans see this process as not only chilling a fundamental right but taxing it as well. One can argue it’s tantamount to a poll tax on one’s right to keep and bear arms.

Moreover, many Americans strongly oppose universal background checks if they lead to the establishment of a federal gun registry, which is, as the Obama administration has stated, the only way to ensure compliance.

In other words, universal background checks will not be the least bit effective if the government cannot track the location of every firearm in civilian hands. And even then, there will be a huge gap in the data as criminals will never register their black market firearms into the system.

Everyone agrees that criminals shouldn’t have guns. But there’s little evidence to suggest that enacting universal background checks will stop bad guys from getting guns. What they will do, for certain, is burden law-abiding citizens and bring us one step closer to universal registration.

Many lawmakers on Capitol Hill recognize this, hence their reluctance to vote for expanded background check legislation. Doubtful these new ads will change their minds.

“Serious Errors” In FBI Reports Of Shooting Incidents

Dr. John Lott, Jr. of the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) recently released a paper written while he was a Senior Advisor for Research and Statistics at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Policy.

His paper, Corrections to the FBI’s Reports on Active Shooting Incidents (May 31, 2021), examines the FBI’s previously released reports on “active shooter incidents” (ASI). The FBI defines an “active shooter” as one or more individuals attempting to kill or killing other people in a populated area. “Implicit in this definition is the shooter’s use of one or more firearms. The ‘active’ aspect of the definition inherently implies the ongoing nature of the incidents, and thus the potential for the response to affect the outcome.”

The FBI published its initial report in 2014, titled A Study of Active Shooter Incidents Between 2000-2013, using information from “104 police department records, after action reports, shooting commission reports, open sources, and FBI resources.” Since then, the agency has published additional annual or bi-annual reports. As stated in the initial report, the goal of these studies is “to provide federal, state and local law enforcement with data so they can better understand how to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from these incidents.”

According to Dr. Lott, “all five reports so far issued were found to have serious errors.” These distort the trend of attacks over time and the evidence on factors that may be important in curtailing attacks in the future.

140 Members Of Congress Reject Biden's Backdoor Gun Ban

According to the federal website Regulations.gov, more than 44,000 people have already submitted public comments on the proposed rule by the Department of Justice and the ATF that would result in a backdoor gun ban of millions of lawfully-owned firearms, and now more than 100 Republican House members are weighing in as well.

North Carolina congressman Richard Hudson is the primary author of a new letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and acting ATF Director Marvin Richardson calling on the agencies to withdraw the proposed rule, arguing that if the “alarming guidance” is allowed to take effect, law-abiding gun owners (including disabled veterans) will be turned into criminals with the stroke of a pen.

Anti-gunners are working to create registrations and licensing schemes throughout this country. While a federal registration is unlikely any time soon, they are happening at the state level. Worse than that, the numbers may be slowly creeping up.

However, opponents of registration note that the only thing such laws are good for is gun confiscation. You can’t take up guns from law-abiding folks if you don’t know where they are, now can you?

Anti-gun voices tend to call that paranoia.

Federal Government Continues To Prove It Can’t Be Trusted With Gun Owner Data

The federal government has rarely made a habit of covering itself in glory, but in recent weeks it seems determined to engender mistrust among the American public. In only the last month, three fresh examples of the federal government’s inability to secure sensitive data have come to light. These examples of official incompetence have once again made clear that the federal government cannot be trusted with gun owner data.

Federal bureaucrats and gun control advocates have made clear that they want the government to maintain more information on firearms and firearm owners. ATF routinely whines about how the out-of-business dealer records (4473s) housed at the National Tracing Center have not been converted into a digitized searchable format. ATF director nominee and paid gun control lobbyist David Chipman has called for the federal registration of tens of millions of commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms.

Gun rights advocates understand that collection of gun and gun owner data facilitates firearm confiscation. In addition to several notable instances in foreign countries, registration records were used to confiscate firearms in New York City in 1991 and 2013. Prominent U.S. politicians such as President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) have all called for gun confiscation. National Council to Control Handguns (now Brady) Chairman Nelson “Pete” Shields acknowledged registration as a prerequisite to handgun confiscation.

However, the ever-present threat of confiscation is not the only compelling argument against the government collecting data on guns and gun owners. The federal government’s impotence in safeguarding data is a constant threat to gun owner privacy.

There is no shortage of historical examples of tyrants using gun control to facilitate the brutalization of a population. The Third Reich used firearm restrictions to control their political enemies and the countries they occupied. The communist countries of the Warsaw Pact tightly controlled or outlawed civilian access to arms. In China, as the Law Library of Congress has noted, “the Firearms-Control Law generally prohibits any private possession of firearms.”

Former President Barack Obama appeared on “Good Morning America” this week to celebrate the unveiling of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

During his conversation with GMA anchor Robin Roberts, the subject of crime came up as it’s no secret that the Windy City has struggled to combat violence.

To put things in perspective, homicides in Chicago were up 56 percent in 2020 (772 homicides) from 2019 (496 homicides), according to the FBI.

Obama indicated that the lack of gun control on the national level is partly to blame, saying that Congress needs to enact “common-sense gun safety measures.”

“Chicago alone can’t stop the easy access and flood of guns into these communities. But what we can do is potentially give young people the sense that there’s another way for them to empower themselves, other than wielding a gun,” Obama said.

Obama did not delve into the details as to what he meant by “common-sense gun safety measures,” but one can safely assume based on his advocacy in the past that he means criminalizing private transfers, banning black rifles and standard magazines with a capacity over 10 rounds, confiscatory red flag laws, no-fly-no-buy lists, prohibitions on certain gun parts and accessories, among others.

Senator Grassley Blocks Gun Control on Senate Floor

U.S.A. -(AmmoLand.com)- On December 2, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) attempted and failed to pass H.R. 8, the dangerously flawed, so-called “universal” background check bill. As you may recall, Nancy Pelosi and her anti-gun allies in the U.S. House passed this misguided legislation earlier this year. H.R. 8 would do nothing to prevent crime, could not be enforced without a federal gun registry, and would turn otherwise law-abiding citizens into criminals for simply loaning a firearm to friends or family members.

Sen. Murphy tried to bypass regular order, normally consisting of a committee hearing and markup, and instead offered a “unanimous consent” request to pass H.R. 8. Under unanimous consent, the Senate can pass legislation without any debate or a recorded vote. Fortunately for law-abiding gun owners, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, objected to Sen. Murphy’s unanimous consent request–effectively blocking H.R. 8 from moving forward.

If you’re a law abiding, responsible gun owner or potential gun owner, who never plans to do harm intentionally to anyone, what are you afraid of?

I’ve got a conservative gun owner in my family who dislikes Democrats but is 100% in support of background checks. To quote him “nobody needs a gun so fast that they can’t wait out a background check.”

What’s the harm in having a background check unless it reveals you’re a risk, in which case you probably shouldn’t own a gun in the first place?

GOP Refuses To Be Guilted Into Universal Background Checks

For quite some time, Democrats have been determined to pass universal background checks. They want them bad.

On the state level, they exist in a number of places. We haven’t really seen them do any good, of course, but we’re constantly told that the issue is all the other states that don’t have them. That’s part of why Democrats say they’re pushing for them at the federal level. At that point, everyone would be on the same page.

Or something.

However, I’m not a fan for a lot of reasons. Just one of them is that anything that is pushed for this dishonestly can’t be good for our nation.

BATFE Now Has Data on Over One Billion Firearms Transactions but They Are Totally Not Building a National Gun Registry

One of the main fears of gun owners for decades has been that we would be required to register our weapons with the federal government. The fear was that such a registry could be used by a particularly lawless administration, like one, for instance, that had an Attorney General who allowed guns to be sold to Mexican drug cartels so he could juice the number of deaths attributed to weapons bought by those cartels illegally in the United States and create a pretext for regulation, for the purpose of weapons confiscation. This is not a new concern. When the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986 was signed into law to address blatant abuses by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (Explosives was added to its name after 9/11), it expressly forbade a federal firearms registry. This is what the law has to say about the custody of firearms records.
