The problem with private health care is a company can extort unreasonable money from sick people over their health. Thats all. Imagine if the police could arbitrarily decide to keep people locked up until they paid some random $$ to get out, and then a private for-profit company took over management of police. Its a similar situation, where the non-economic collides with the economic.

Government involvement in the healthcare industry is precisely what caused the problem.

Three main things need to happen. Eliminate lobbying and assign mandatory death penalty for any politician or bureaucrat guilt of any felony. Deregulate the healthcare industry so that barriers to entry will lower and more competition will enter the marketplace.

Why are there so many choices of types of quality shoes at fair prices? Because there is a ton of competition for consumers. Foster more competition in the healthcare industry and prices will come down while quality goes up. Very simple economics.

Sick people cannot shop around. They are sick, they're busted, they'll pay anything they've got no questions asked, they are at the mercy of the supplier and don't have alternatives. Your personal health is not a game.

Our government could fix this very easily. Mandate that all pharmaceutical drugs have a maximum 10 year life on their patent before going generic and then purchase a small drug manufacturer and put them as a government utility whose primary job is to study the market and produce generics that are either not being produced or generics that are not being sold for cheep enough by the other manufacturers. Put a 30% profit margin and give the business as much government money as needed to expand their facilities to produce the generics. Within 10 years drug prices will be slashed 80% or more from their crazy rates

Hey dumbass! Its the insurance companies and the pharmacies charging that much for truvada. UHC.is trying to get the customers to pay for it like 1800.00 a pop. If you were smart, most people arent, you'd use a manufacturer coupon to help with the cost. But, be warned, once that money is used up, you'll pay the high copays afterwards.
I know bc I work for a specialty mail order company. It's bs. The CEO of our company made 18 million last yr. That's criminal! But, they act like it's so hard to let people have their meds. You seem to be misunderstanding.

You pay the insurance company for Rx coverage. The insurance companies don't charge you for medicine ... they just sometimes require you a copay at the pharmacies.

The pharmacies buy the medicines from the drug manufacturers. They profit much less than the drug manufacturers who set the price of the drugs at whatever cost they want, especially if they hold the patent and nobody else can create that drug.
