There was a thread recently about the carnage of the squirrels in this region lately. I think last year the squirrel population boomed but then this year there is not enough to support them all, and they are going far afield and risking highways to find acorns. It may point to not enough large predators as well. The hawks and coyotees and foxes need to have a good year. I've been seeing a lot of dead animals by the roadside lately. The city has been cutting down trees in the name of safety. Yes they are sweet, but god are they messy and stinky and you can't just raise it and go release it, if you do you might as well just kill it. You have to teach it to not trust people and animals. We built a LARGE cage outside and put Sparkle (yes that was her name) in it, we continued to feed her, but not allow her anywhere near us and then we had to try and make her afraid of the cats, them pawing and staring at the cage didn't take to long, after a week or 2 we opened the upper door of the cage so she could come and go as she pleased, it took another week or so for her to completely leave, but she did. Thinking you can raise one and release it and have a friend in the backyard is just a death warrant for the squirrel, please don't...
