Nuclear watchdog warns of radioactive leak at South Carolina fuel factory

Radioactive uranium has leaked through a three-inch hole in the floor at a nuclear fuel factory in South Carolina, contaminating the soil below the plant, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission says.
According to the commission, the hole goes six feet down into the soil below the Westinghouse factory’s concrete floor. While the commission cannot yet say whether the toxic substance has leached into the area’s groundwater, agency records show that the soil beneath the plant contains 1,300 times the amount of uranium typically found in soil.

The commission learned of the leak on July 12, and still does not have results on recent groundwater tests, which would show whether pollution had washed into the area’s water supply.

State Department of Health and Environmental Control officials said that the leak does not pose a threat to local water supplies, but activists are concerned that Congaree National Park, a vast wetland just several miles from the plant, may be contaminated.

Also, If you live in the New England area, I'd be very worried about the growing amount of uranium (way above safe levels) that's found in your aquifers (the place where your water plants pump up water for your homes).

Luckily the city I live in has its own reservoir. But does that really even matter anymore?

Seriously...they shouldnt allow any residential areas within 25 miles of any plants.

But .. but .. we need all that U-235 spent-fuel (fission by-products) to make depleted-uranium artillery shells and munitions..

We can't use lead .. lead is just .. so so bad for the birds!

IT IS NOT A NUKE POWER PLANT. There is such a lack of comprehension these days even here where one would expect higher intelligence than average.
It is a fabrication facility for zirconium clad nuclear fuel rods containing Uranium fuel pellets. They are one of our customers. This could be something, but thenfuel isn't hot there, so I doubt much.

the only Uranium around a plant like that is
in the Fuel Rods. and the Fuel Rods don't
usually dissolve and flow in to the drain pipes,
or break-up into powder.
