Re: Governments will close down bitcoin and cryptocurrencies if they get too big, warns Jamie Dimon
Unfortunately Jamie Dimond is RIGHT!!

If a country OUTLAWS the use of Crypto Currencies ... AND ... makes you a criminal for using them ... HOW are you going to use those Crypto Currencies to buy REAL TANGIBLE GOODS, Services, and Real Estate?

The point of ANY currency is to be a medium of exchange ... and if a type of currency is made illegal to be a medium of exchange in some or ALL major countries that dynamic harms it's usefulness to be used for that purpose.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52154903

The beauty of crypto is that I can make a transaction directly with you right this minute, in this thread. This is totally real. Absolutely peer to peer.

Does anyone seriously think that Governments worldwide will UNIVERSALLY give up their racket of being the only entity LEGALLY allowed to issue a piece of paper, or in the case of Crypto Currencies a set of digital electrons, that can LEGALLY be converted to REAL STUFF? Governments worldwide have ordered people KILLED for less transgressions upon their rackets.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52154903

Yes, and they SO desperately want to... the problem is they cannot. Governments are power structures. The kill individuals that threaten their power, people that start movements (libertydollar.org) or write articles ( [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] or have a lot of money and don't pay the piper (H Hughes).

But with Bitcoin there is no power structure... only peers. Yes they can go after exchanges, but not the end users. That is the ENTIRE point.

Criticizing Jamie Diamond on this issue is merely shooting the canary in the coal mine for indicating that there is bad air in the mine.

Shooting the messenger is NOT going change government reactions to Crypto Currencies once they look like they are taking "market share" from those government's racket.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52154903

You are right: Governments hate crypto.
You are wrong: they cannot stop them... UNLESS they can totally control access to the internet. And, I guess you are right... they eventually will...

...now if the Crypto Currencies were actually backed 100% by REAL value items, such as gold of silver, with free conversion to those hard assets in some location ... then they might keep some competition going even if governments outlawed them
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52154903

Again, you miss the point. Crypto IS the currency. It is a "hard" currency because it actually is "rare". Yes we give it value just like we give gold and silver and Fed Notes value and fresh milk value. Try taking out a jar with gram of Plutonium in it and trading it for anything anywhere. Is it valuable? Yes, like $2,500 a gram... does anyone else attach value to it? Very, very few.

Value (like beauty and ALL other traits of social construction) is in the eye of the beholder.

So... the most LIQUID currency will be the most practically valuable.

That is exactly why the bankers especially are terrified about Crypto.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 48501570

the problem is...how do you turn bitcoin into food, hookers and booze without the govt allowing exchanges...you cant. At the point when you can barter openly with bitcoin, it will be more illegal to have than newks....our friendly gov will see to that as China's is already in progress of.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7506877

How? You find people with food and booze... or people that are hookers... and trade them for crypto directly.

Try it! There are way more people that you can believe that are already doing it.

It may become illegal at some point in time, not sure about that, but it won't be stoppable. Again, your likening it to nukes is a mistaken likening to a centralized power object.

Its not at all centralized. That is the beauty of it.

China vs. crypto? Hehehe... I would love to see what is actually going on "on the street". Big money boys in China are moving capital, that is what is going on.

They would shut the exchanges down and outlaw conversion into usd. Easy peasy.. How would you trade it then? Peer to peer? Theres no medium.. get caught? 5-10 mandatory.. Thats how..

You are uninformed as to how this works. I can make thousands of copies of my wallet if I want. Everybody encrypts them, nobody else is able to access them. I don't even need a thumb drive or a written piece of paper or anything to access/send/receive funds, just my key and an internet connection.

You need to do some reading before talking about subjects you know nothing of. Either read the bible or read up on cryptos, one of the two child. Jesus Christ.

as for transfer.. cash-by-mail is hugely popular thanks to how the postal system works. check out localbitcoins or paxful if you don't care for IRC.

but the latter has been around since 1988, and I doubt is going away anytime soon.

bots that run IRC ecosystems, e.g. the warez scene, historically have been hosted on hacked servers... and there will be 0-day's for that even after formal code verification becomes practical... as long as .gov wants OS backdoors
[link to www.cs.rochester.edu]

the only serious threat ics is if ISPs in some country were required, by law, to mandate an OS-integrated, transparent internet ID system, apart from which they won't provide /any/ access to the internet.

Not sure how feasible that is technically, but I think governments would love it, and sheep would accept it, to say the least.

Dimon called cryptocurrencies a "novelty" and said they are "worth nothing."
A company called Blockswater has filed a market abuse complaint in Sweden against Dimon, claiming he deliberately spread false and misleading information about bitcoin.

Eventually governments will close down cryptocurrencies: JPMorgan CEO
14 Hours Ago | 02:51

JPMorgan Chase Chief Executive Jamie Dimon has laid into bitcoin and digital currencies once again, warning that governments will shut them down if they grow too large.

"Right now these crypto things are kind of a novelty. People think they're kind of neat. But the bigger they get, the more governments are going to close them down," Dimon said during an interview with CNBC-TV18 in New Delhi on Friday.

Dimon was concerned that with bitcoin, ethereum and various initial coin offerings (ICOs), there are now cryptocurrencies everywhere.

"It's creating something out of nothing that to me is worth nothing," he said. "It will end badly."

Dimon warned that governments will eventually crack down on cryptocurrencies and will attempt to control it by threatening anyone who buys or sells bitcoin with imprisonment, which would force digital currencies into becoming a black market.

These are the latest comments from Dimon attacking bitcoin. Earlier this month he called the cryptocurrency a "fraud.". His comments, along with several prominent hedge fund investors, came before a sharp sell-off in bitcoin. The price for one bitcoin fell from around $4,340 to as low as $2,981.05 in the days after his comments.

During the interview on Friday, Dimon also criticized bitcoin for not being a fiat currency formed by a government and backed by a central bank.

"With central banks, (the money) says legal tender: you have to take this as payment. It's very cheap to do, it's very easy to move back and forth. JPMorgan moves $6 trillion around the world every day very efficiently, very quietly, very effectively and very cost efficient," he said.

"Creating money out of thin air without government backing is very different from money with government backing."

less then 50% fair use act.....

You can say the same thing about any fiat currency as well like the US Dollar. We're not on the gold standard anymore so it has value because we 'think' it has value. There's nothing really behind it. The cost for new dollars is something like 12 cents to actually produce...so why is it worth a dollar? Because we 'believe'. It all runs on faith. No reason this can't work for cryptocurrencies as well.

But thanks, Jamie, for showing us that you have a dictator's mindset. We bailed your ass out. Without us, your bank would have gone bust. The ONLY way you are a "genius" banker is when somebody bails your ass out of your stupid decisions.

Absolutely. Which is probably why you ought to do some research into cryptocurrencies yourself before opening your mouth somewhat out of place in another thread like this.
 Quoting: Rest 73462438

I don't need to look at the technology of cryptocurrencies. I have a book called "The webapplication hacker's handbook".

In the first chapter of this book it goes into how computer networking works, from the hardware layer (Like the copper cable of ADSL.) to the application layer much further down the line.

Sure you can say your computer is secure and only traceable by a random IP assigned by your Internet provider. But your ISP knows who you are and has records of everything you do on their network and can track you by your hardware Machine Address Code.

Even if you spoof your MAC in your router, the person providing you with internet can log everything you do by sending a log to whatever computer their want from their router.

And I wouldn't recommend using stolen Wifi because criminals usually provide unsecured Wifi to log everything hoping to get a would-be thief's banking or passwords.

A buddy of mine used my internet for something and I have his Facebook and dating website passwords in the keylogger installed on my computer.

Even though he considers his Facebook to be sacrosanct, it's easy to break into by recovering his password by using his email. But for all his failures and there are many, I maintain his privacy by not posting to his Facebook "OMG! Hillary is one sexy taco!"

-----

The point of this long winded and rather boring post is this... Whoever controls the computer network providing you with internet, owns your internet access.

How can they confiscate what they can't track?

You are an uninformed idiot.

"If you don't know, I'm not going to tell you." Great attitude right there. Hey, everyone, you should try to be more like this poster, f*** everyone.

Absolutely. Which is probably why you ought to do some research into cryptocurrencies yourself before opening your mouth somewhat out of place in another thread like this.

How does knowing my computer's MAC assist someone, anyone, in "confiscating" a password kept only in my head? I don't pass anything through my isp that I do not want the world to know. No offense, but you really ought to take a look at how bitcoin core or zcashd operates. Encryption occurs independent of internet connectivity, it is a separate event. One must literally steal a thought to steal a password protected with seriousness... It is not possible.

There is no such thing as a stolen cryptocurrency token. You either give up the privkey to someone else or you don't.

Were science's theories presumed to be correct I could tell you in truth there are more possible privkeys than there are atoms in the universe. Not hack-able.

Sigh, all the so called elite have to do is throttle the port used by every Bitcoin software to make it so you have to use their exchange or wait 20 years for your transaction to go through.

Heck just having a hacker use a Bitcoin port for a worm would kill that Bitcoin.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a technotard too!

I own $50 $35 worth of Ripple but I'm not delusional enough to think it's going to make me rich or take down anything but my bank balance...
