On similar principals, a drainage ditch my grandfather dug is now offically a "stream" and must be conserved. Thanks to there being a stream there now instead of the previous ditch, the land on either side's use is limited. So the stream becomes something like a road with a right of way on either side eating into the property. Not as severe as the Bundy's loss of grazing rights but an illustration of how regulation affects people who want to use their land to produce stuff to sell. Bit by bit its made off limits to the "owner" by regulation. It would be easier to deal with if these programs came with compensation, or some sort of transitional plan ("raise fish in your new government created stream! grow berries on your new government created stream bank!") but its all "don't touch it or we will fine, fine, fine you"

My father was a rancher in the West.

I looked at buying a number of ranches about 30 years ago. Even then, it was clear that the ranches on BLM were a target for the environazis and land-grabbing crony capitalists.

It's really sad what happened. I hope the BLM perps are held responsible for their thefts.

Here's how it works in Nevada: monied interests cause the BLM and environmental organizations to essentially condemn rancher's land for whatever reason - leaping spotted toad, some fish or mouse.

The rancher's land is then worth nothing, so he sells out very cheap to outfits like the Nature Conservancy. They split out the water rights, sell it to the monied interests, and then give the land deed to the Feral Government.
