Re: Mad World
The caduceus is the traditional symbol of Hermes and features two snakes winding around an often winged staff. It is often used as a symbol of medicine, especially in the United States, but this is incorrect. (The correct symbol for medicine is the Rod of Asclepius, which has only one snake and no wings.)

i was thinking about afghanistan this morning. it seems since alexander the great to the present, a bunch of hillbillies refusing to change their way of life to accommodate civilized outsiders, have lived in relative simplicity that confounds the rest of the civilized world.

what is more perplexing is how they can continue to sit on mountains of resources that the world wants, but cannot access without paying a price that is too costly!

the world cannot use what it is unable to extract! lol

I decided I wanted to watch something mindless and unlike anything I would normally watch yesterday.

Scrolled around and settle on Hulu. Anthony Bourdain 'Without Reservations'.

Traveling around and eating things..that sounds mindless.

The first episode was about Haiti and how almost nothing is better there going on 11 years after the earthquake there, that killed some estimate 300,000 people.

The rubble is still there. All of it. Rebar sticking out. Tent cities.

What small amount of eating there was I noticed what was mindless now was becoming depressing.

Pushed through the first episode to land in Cambodia and the Killing Fields.

Wait..isn't this about eating?

I shut it off after seeing a fisherman offering blessings to Bourdain about 'long life and great health' knowing he killed himself not long after it was filmed.

Re: Mad World
The reason I brought it up was because Sean Penn is featured heavily in the first episode and mentioned how much 'untapped potential' exists in Haiti but the people are understandably traumatized, thus distrustful and disorganized.

Learned helplessness.

afghanese are not any of the above. in their minds they have sent the two largest world powers packing and who's to said they aren't right.

it may be important to examine what it means to be traumatized in the modern world. people living in the modern world are traumatized in very subtle and insidious ways!

people may be able to perceive their trauma only in their dreams. or their trauma may manifest in sleeping and eating disorders, to name just a few! lol
