It requires faith, and Peter had little faith... yes...But also, you have to be light as air to walk on water; and only air, spirit, can pass through the eye of a needle...Only air, spirit, can walk on water; when Peter's soul projected itself to Jesus he walked on water at the moment; it was the power of Jesus' spirit that kept him afloat but as soon as Peter's thoughts reflected back to himself the weight that he carried in his mortal fleshly body dragged him down...That is why Jesus keeps telling us to lose, die, to self and be born in spirit...Only in God's spirit is there life, anything outside of God's spirit is lost to life.

Just a guess, but maybe he had a prophetic vision of the tale as told in Mark and saw that according to that one, he doesn't even get out of the boat, let alone walk on water. Knowing that the Bible would be inerrant, he freaked and lost it.

It is because he lost faith.

This story is one of the most beautiful examples of the human condition.

For we are all God Like, made on His image.

And we could all "walk on water" should we be true to our own divinity.

St. Peter is the example of us all,must as he is in his denial of Christ.

He is the perfect representation of the tensions that all of us face - to be God like in the face of our human frailties.

Gotta give him credit, he was the only one who tried.

Peter lost his faith and began to doubt he could. And he fell.

i think the over arching message here besides the faith issue is that God will orchestrate scenarios that call for us to stretch our faith beyond our seemingly human measure

The moral of this lesson is knowing the voice of God through his Son:

Matthew 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
14:26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
14:27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
14:28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
14:29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
14:30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

Why did Peter sink? Jesus asked wherefore didst thou doubt?
Was it not when Jesus said it is I? Peter said, if it be thou, bid me to come.

Remember when Jesus said my sheep know my voice? Peter had to be converted. (Dangerous too is to ignore/override that still small voice from God.) Look what he does after Jesus dies for him, being glorified:

John 21:4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
21:5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
21:6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
21:7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

Interesting; he was not interested in testing if it was Jesus or not. He knew John knew that it was him.

To look for a sign if it is God or not can be deadly. We individually must know his voice for ourselves. If Satan can bring fire from heaven, deceive King Saul showing supposedly Samuel talking to him from the dead, etc. what a deadly window of opportunity is opened up to him when we do not know when the Holy Ghost is speaking to us or not.

Euh ever got bad experiences on school for being a shiny one and get ditched over and over again just because the view was taking so long for others or the wall while developing a brain ...guess that sorta.

The same reason we all do - we take our eyes off of Him.
