Texas Town Fires Police Dept., Hires Private Citizens For Security — Guess What Happened to Crime?
The community of Sharpstown, Texas decided that they didn’t need the police any longer. They made a controversial decision to fire the local police department and hire private citizens, granted no special rights that ordinary citizens do not have, to keep them safe. That was back in 2012, and since then, Sharpstown residents say the private security company, SEAL Security Solutions, have done a much better job than the police used to. Crimes is down 61% in only 20 months.

Second, they didn’t fire anybody, technically speaking. They just refused to renew a yearly contract with the Harris County Constables’ Office for extra security patrols. (Sharpstown residents can still be ticketed and/or arrested by Harris County constables, just as they could by an HPD cop. I am sure some resident will try to pull the “You can’t bust me, we fired you,” card soon.) In addition to patrol, process-serving, and court security, Harris County constables will contract with neighborhoods for supplemental patrols, but their services do not come cheap. The Braeswood Place neighborhood, in near southwest Houston, pay - See more at: [link to www.texasmonthly.com]

They are probably saving a huge amount in police pensions and high salaries. Private companies usually are more competitively priced than bloated government bureaucracy.
And if one of private security persons screws up or commits a crime, they can be fired, not put on paid administrative leave and then returned to work while a two or three year internal investigation goes on. And I'll bet the private security personnel don't get away with lying about what happened at the scene like cops do.
