Say you have a class full of third graders and let's say half are doing math at the second grade level. With this method, everybody can do the required work, and get the right answer. And the testing will show they ALL succeed in solving the subtraction problems. Only none of them really learned true subtraction. Then the top students are stuck wasting their time and don't drill on the essential math skills they should be learning for their grade. They will fall behind to be at the same level as the slower kids. But everybody wins this way, right? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 53966348 (hint, it IS NOT 'new math'!!) . Really? So what is common core about??? My son is in second grade and the math he is bringing home is ridiculous. Example: 425 +312 ----- 5+2 = 7 20+10 = 30 400+300=700 7 +30 +700 ------ 737 Please explain why they would require kids to add like this instead of adding straight down? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 68736400 United States 04/11/2015 10:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | TOO FUCKING MANY people with NO knowledge of what Common Core is, or is about!! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 53966348 (hint, it IS NOT 'new math'!!) . I think this teacher sums up the totality of what is going on with Common Core, which you, AC, apparently would like us to delve into... Common Core was initially a state initiative, but got hijacked by a small group in Washington D.C. Well, when the Federal bureaucrats got a hold of it, they changed it and molded it into a whole K-12 curriculum -then it became this monster. This happened even though there is a Federal law specifically outlawing the Federal Government from designing a curriculum for the State funded K-12 public school system. So they call them standards and say it not a "curriculum," to get around the Federal law. As this teacher points out that is a complete lie. Anyway, what she said (paraphrased) in her speech was: I am very passionate about what I do. I was in Louisville school system for seven years, I loved my job. Outstanding system. Teahers were great, students were great. I loved my job. Then these common core standards came down the line and I became more and more miserable. I have recently transferred school systems and cut my salary in half. I know what some people are saying is that the standards do not dictate the curriculum. If you know anything about teaching, your standards dictate the curriculum. Let me tell you the reason the standards dictate the curriculum. Because my job security, and my familys security depends on it. Let me ask you a question, if your little Sally doesnt pass the state assessment are you going to pat me on the back and say good job, thats OK? No, you are going to wonder what happened wrong. And you are going to ask me when little Sally was in my classroom, what I didnt do. Whats going to be tested are the standards. And when the standards are tested, thats what you spend your time on. It is not a standard - it is a curriculum, and when its high stakes testing, you are going to be evaluated on that. There will be no room to teach anything else, at all. The method I use for subtracting large numbers in my head is pretty much the same as the common core method. If I need to solve 343-121 quickly and I had no pen/paper, I will count up from 121 to 343, like this: Start at 121, then count 221, then 321. That's 200. Then count 331 and 341. That's another 20. Then count 342 and 343. That's 2 more. So the total is 222. I can do this in about 1-2 seconds mentally. Like the lady in the video said, different methods work for different people. Not everybody learns the same way. Does anyone else do subtraction like this? |

You can easily do it subtracting straight down. 24,112. I did it just looking at it using the old way, and typing the numbers here, as I did it. If you dont master the tried and true way of doing basic subtraction on the smaller numbers in third grade, you will falter when presented with bigger and bigger problems. Give me a break! |

That doesn't mean they are correct. I'm sick of hearing people bitch about "Common Core". First, it is not a Federal ANYTHING. It is a standards based approach to learning that is adopted state by state as they wish. It uses standard approaches to learning math and reading. I'm 44 and seeing my sons learn from this is refreshing. It has methodology to help learn shit that we just had to somehow figure out on our own when I was a kid. Most of the people that I've seen complaining is because they don't get it or understand the methodology. Keep your fucking minds open people, it's a good thing. This old hag should shut the fuck up, she hasn't changed her ways in 100 years, what the fuck is that. |
