To me, they allow for a connection with other souls, be they human or not) that I just can't get other places. For instance, DMT is way too internal for me, and I cannot interact with anything except my own stream of pure consciousness, and that's regardless whether I take the freebase salt or brew up some homemade ayahuasca. Peyote is nice, but not my bag. Same for San Pedro, Hawaiian Baby Woodrose.
