Meaning of "Those who know do not speak." And "Know thyself."
“Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know.” - Lao Tzu

I think I have figured out the context of this quote and can share it. It is not literal or meant to mean those that know, don't tell others and those that don't know, do. It doesn't mean this.

It is a very powerful statement about meditation. There is a difference between knowing and thinking in life and in meditation. It is not difficult to test the two. Knowing is without verbalization hence "those that know, don't speak" and thinking is with verbalization. An example. A very powerful thing to "know" in meditation is that "everything is changing, or inpermanance, or this to shall pass."

If this is known rather than thought it can take you far down "the path." A lot of people however, including me off and on, gets trapped in the thought of these things and it doesn't do what it is meant to do. Knowing seems to be able to convince the mind of the truth of impermance and thought cannot do this perhaps because thought is a part of the mind itself.

Hope this makes sense.

Now moving onto the deeper meaning of "know thyself." The first question must be what is the "Self" and where do I find it? After lots of searching I believe the Buddha was correct in saying there is "no self." What we believe to be the self is not actually the self. I think the self is just our thought of what the self is. I think of my "self" differently than other people. It is not a set entity which can be defined.

In essence, when you can effectively know, as in non-verbalization know the self, which I believe is actually thought, it will just pass away like everything else in existence.

I have actually reached this level before but accidentally. If you can practice knowing rather than thinking, know thyself by knowing the thought of just the continuous "I" which can be verbalized. This "I" slowly becomes less and less "loud" mentally and when it finally goes it is a huge change within. This eventually leads to massive waves and pure knowing or cognition without "thought". This is as far as I have been before but I am confident that even this "cognition" period passes away. And this is the path to "nirvana." If one can be aware of pure cognition than that must mean there is something beyond "us".

Anyways I hope this message reaches the person or people it is meant for. One day soon I will be able to talk with more certainty and less experiential wisdom of just what has happened to me.

Good luck and God speed to you all.

Cool post, but it actually does in fact mean "Those who know, do not speak. Those who speak do not know."

Literally.

You keep trying to convince us of things, but are you really just trying to convince yourself?

I am one of those who know, and I do not intake anything from anywhere. It is inner-standing with the universe. You need nothing else except what is inside you.

"The kingdom of heaven is inside you."

Everything in this world is a lie. You can only parade around in it and wear some masks.

Stop trying to figure it out in your head, its not going to happen.

Yes cool post and it makes sense but I think it's literal as well. I deal with so many people talking out of their asses it makes me sick. So many people love to hear themselves talk and saying so much BS to make themselves feel good about themselves

It would do you well to think about this statement. Figure it out, in your head. You'll be better off for it, I promise you.

Inner dialogue is secondary thought.

When you hear words in your head, it's because you transferred a thought into those words. This is a step. Cut out that step and you have pure thought.

The process of changing thoughts into words creates a delay which gives room for people to question those thoughts. Doubt can creep in as to where those thoughts came from and if they're correct.

I'm 99% sure this is what Lao Tzu meant when he made this comment.

What about the Buddha? He knew and he spoke.

What about Jesus? He knew and he spoke.

We tend to read this message in the external relative literal term of it but it is meant to be take on a deeper level.

Test it on yourself. It only takes 5 minutes. Notice the difference between thinking "this too shall pass," and knowing "this too shall pass."

There is a difference and it is huge.

One can also think of "full acceptance of the present moment," and know "full acceptance of the present moment," or perfect BEING for those that suggested this above.

Cheers.

It's a political comment rather than a philosophical one; he is making the point of the hidden hand...those that talk are BBC, CCN, NBC, generally all MSM. Don't look to the people in the limelight look to the people advising from the shadows. Information is power and the truly powerful don't like sharing.

what you see is appearance , words are appearance , your sensory finctions are appearance and everything that describes them is appearance

to know your self , is to know the thing that is not of appearance and how can you speak of such a thing ? popcorn

The freedom to choose when to go or stay is the greatest freedom that we have.

When the highest knowledge is obtained, there becomes a calm of allowing it to happen when it wants. But the highest knowledge can be easily forgotten if not ceased upon.

There is a sound behind everything. Or many sounds. They sound almost like "whooping" or tecknotic reverberations. Or dissonance. It is hard to recognize them because they are always there but it's easy to realize them when they go away. If one can hear them and be with impermanence, they go away. The less you can hear the more what is below will rise away.
