Population and technology go hand in hand.

That's why technology goes medieval when we've nuked ourselves in the past.

Take something simple like modern farm machinery.

Even if it were possible to dream up a device thousands of years ago it would be so incredibly inefficient with respect to its maintenance, engineering and production of all the parts and materials required for that device.

If big brother wiped out 99% of the population tomorrow, families would farm with basic tools for there own needs and technology like phones and internet would be useless as there would be no importance to communicating to such a wasteland plus the infrastructure would naturally collapse to simple times.

Hand and hand.

We will only colonize interstellar space if population sky rockets.

If a world power thinks they can delete us and go star trek, they would have to build the population of today again to wait for technological advancements. Essentially they will go back to medieval times too.

But sure let's make an approximation engine to try to replicate emotions.

Hate Emotion : integer;
Love Emotion : integer;
Happy Emotion : integer;

etc..

So we'd have a collective of 'good emotion integer's and 'bad emotion integers'

Now we have to program the computer to act of these emotions, remember we are trying to give value to things, how do we give meaning to the word 'apple?'

We give 'apple' meaning in that it is a red delicious food that is good to the taste, which we found by the experience of eating it.

So after we somehow replicate the human tongue of taste, the feeling of satiation from eating it, we still have to keep a detailed emotional database of the experience - and this is learning as an approximation. Each experience must work in a democratic fashion of intermeshing and possibly consulted or not consulted to create future action.

I think if we took 2 million of the top scientists with printed money and an unlimited budget, spent 300 years developing computers at the sub micron level that execute petaflops, memory banks in the peta exabytes would could make a computer with enough structural depth to learn. We would have to create engines that themselves would create the code, simulating the human down to the cellular level.

In the end no one would be sure how it would even behave, we'd find the thing acting like a woman foolishly fretting over it's titanium exo-skeleton or like a child infinitely fascinated by playing with a handful of sand and studying it's molecular structure. We'd tweak the thing to give it a knowledge system to learn or whatever and who knows if we would then make our first terminator.

Uh huh. Just like cloning when it first came out.

Meanwhile, they do as they please in private.

Here is what's happening-- computing speeds are getting fast enough to do it, they know you know that, but they want to shut up your curious lil mind, because AI is for them, not you. See?

Just look up the companies they have bought in the last few years and you can see they are truly SKYNET in the making.
