Ebola epidemic likely to explode by mid-December: Study
The Ebola epidemic already devastating swaths of West Africa will explode by mid-December and could kill tens of thousands of people unless urgent action is taken, a new study warned today.
A team of seven scientists from Yale University's Schools of Public Health and Medicine and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Liberia developed a mathematical transmission model of the viral disease and applied it to Liberia's most populous county, Montserrado, an area already hard hit.
The researchers determined that tens of thousands of new Ebola cases - and deaths - are likely by December 15 if the epidemic continues on its present course.

The Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), endorsed by the 194 member states of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in 2012, provides a framework for achieving the vision of the Decade of Vaccines—delivering full access to immunization by 2020 and extending the full benefits of immunization to all people, regardless of where they are born, who they are, or where they live.
The GVAP sets out strategic objectives, recommends actions and stakeholder responsibilities for achieving the objectives, and provides for monitoring and evaluation of the plan’s implementation. All WHA countries now report annually on progress against GVAP indicators.
The plan was the result of a global collaboration involving governments and elected officials, health professionals, academic institutions, vaccine manufacturers, nongovernmental organizations, and civil society organizations.

The GVAP has six strategic objectives:
-Individual countries should have primary responsibility for providing effective and quality immunisation services for all and it wants all countries to commit to immunisation as a priority;
-Immunisation is an individual, community and governmental responsibility that transcends borders and it wants individuals and communities to understand the value of vaccines and to demand immunisation as both their right and their responsibility;
-Equitable access to immunisation is a core component of the right to health and it wants the benefits of immunisation to be equitably extended to all people;
-To be effective, immunisation needs to be closely coordinated with health systems and other primary healthcare delivery programmes and it wants strong immunisation programmes to be an integral part of broader healthcare systems, the world over;
-To be sustainable, immunisation programmes require informed decisions, informed implementation strategies, improved financial management, improved oversight and appropriate levels of financial investment and it wants immunisation programmes to have access to quality supply, innovative technologies and predictable funding;
-There needs to be a greater focus on quality, education and innovation if immunisation programmes are to realise their full potential to save and improve lives and it wants targeted and innovative R&D at the discovery, development, manufacture and delivery stages and at the country, regional and global levels.
It is an ambitious plan. However, it is also detailed, carefully considered and, above all, achievable.

NIH/NIAID: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Decade of Vaccines
NIAID will play a lead role in one of the strategic objectives outlined in the GVAP: Maximize benefits of immunization through global vaccine R&D efforts. Specifically, in the area of developing new vaccines, NIAID activities will support research on fundamental aspects of the human immune response; on immunological and molecular characteristics of disease-causing microbes; as well as research aimed at an improved understanding of how populations as a whole respond to vaccines.

WHO: World Health Organization and the Decade of Vaccines
WHO is leading efforts using existing partnerships and coordinating mechanisms to support regions and countries to adapt the GVAP for implementation at the regional and country level. Country involvement in this process reinforces a key tenet of the GVAP, which is to increase national ownership of immunization programs. Many more partners and stakeholders are expected to lend their support in the future as the plan is implemented in the countries.

UNICEF: Global health leaders launch Decade of Vaccines Collaboration
The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have announced a collaboration to increase coordination across the international vaccine community and create a Global Vaccine Action Plan. This plan will build on the successes of current work to achieve key milestones in the discovery, development and delivery of lifesaving vaccines to the most vulnerable populations in the poorest countries over the next decade.
The collaboration follows the January 2010 call by Bill and Melinda Gates for the next ten years to be the Decade of Vaccines. The Global Vaccine Action Plan will enable greater coordination across all stakeholder groups – national governments, multilateral organizations, civil society, the private sector and philanthropic organizations -- and will identify critical policy, resource, and other gaps that must be addressed to realize the life-saving potential of vaccines.

This report identifies country-level strategies to reach the unreached. As no blueprint exists, efforts to address inequalities must start with a bottleneck analysis to identify the barriers to progress, and to inform the development of a contextually specific strategy.

The DoD is also HEAVILY involved, and other entities are hopping on board as the agenda is rolled out (such as Johnson & Johnson which recently agreed to collaborate with GSK/NIH to be able to better mass produce their ebola vaccine for use in early 2015).

Ebola & Polio (EV68) will be the first diseases targeted in the GVAP, and the world will be used as an open lab, with the population used as guinea pigs for their experimental vaccine agenda which is set to take place over the next 5 years (with several different vaccination phases and several different controlled virus releases to be involved).
