Okay so on a serious note, that's not really an adequate definition that you gave him.

False flags are intentionally manufactured/orchestrated 'events' conducted under false pretenses. The intention is to create a desired response or emotional reaction for the purposes of furthering an ulterior agenda. You make something appear to be what it was not. For instance, attacking your own troops but making it appear to be an enemy attack for the purposes of instigating an armed conflict and thereby justifying your pre-planned 'response'.

I always thought a 'false flag' was one group pretending to be another group to get that other group in trouble, which usually benefits the original group.

For example, country A asks country B to help attack country C

Country B says 'no' for reasons.

Country A puts together a group or army flying the flag of country C, and creates an incident by attacking country B

Because country B thinks they were attacked by country C, they now agree to join country A in the fight against country C

...at least that is how it's always been told to me.

Now feel free to replace 'country' with government agency, corporation, religious group, girl scouts, scientists, secret societies, aliens, crab people, etc. And you get the idea. Lots of deception, carrying out actions by posing as a different group.

I think that's what a 'false flag' is anyway.

A false flag is when an event is made to happen - instead of happening naturally - that is used to justify further consolidation of power by the government, including a police state or a war.

If he asked that question, it is a good sign. He is beginning to wake up, feed him little portions of truth and let his awakening be his idea.

Sad that everyone seems to think this. No False Flag is NOT synonymous with distraction.
