Atheism is not supposed to be a rationalization of amorality or immorality. With so many deranged people out there, humans are generally not yet ready for atheism, so if the fear of eternal damnation is the only thing standing between them and things like 'mild pedophilia', then I'm thankful for their fear of god's wrath, even if I do not believe in god myself.

So basically he is saying one cannot condemn mild pedophilia of 50 or 60 yrs ago and going back through history, because of the changes and evolution of society... Just as we're not supposed to condemn people of hundreds and indeed thousands of years ago who would marry and have sex as soon as puberty is reached, or as we're not supposed to condemn the prophet Mohammed for his extremely young child bride.
