Ann Makosinski, a high school junior from Canada, harnessed Peltier tiles (which generate electricity when one side is cooled and the other is heated) to make a flashlight that can run for about 20 minutes by using nothing more than human body heat. This puts her in the running for the Google Science Fair's $50,000 top prize, to be announced in September. We are in a new phase of a very old war." Gates of Vienna. Puhlease. Assembling a bunch of ready made components while daddy helps does not make someone an inventor. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074 This. There's a HS girl near me that "discovered" a new star. Of course this discovery happened at home while using her rich dad's super expensive telescope and equipment. If she was born into a working class family, she wouldn't have discovered shit. As far as this flashlight invention, it could be useful in the future because led technology is getting more and more efficient, and it'd be great to get away from batteries as they're bad for the environment and the rechargeables are a fire hazard while charging, but I think if led technology ever got that efficient, then one lithium battery should power a flashlight for years. In other words, this is an invention that I guarantee many flashlight companies already thought of, but the led technology is no where near good enough for it to be anything other than a gimick. But we'll just massage the ego of a youngster instead and pretend like they invented the wheel. Not trying to hate, it really would be cool, but we're many many years away from this being doable, and when it is doable, it will be thanks to the engineers who are improving led technology at a blistering pace, and not some girl who is piggybacking off that technology. When the led technology is there, the engineers will come up with a way to power the light other than batteries. Trust me, that's the easy part. |
