I was 16 in '69, so I was like late and on the fringe of that "counter-culture" but I can say that most of the people I encountered were narcistic assholes, similar to what we have today, taking their cues from lsd gurus, and music promoters, and yes, I lean toward suspecting that the CIA played a role in flooding drug into the population, because prior to about '65, their was no mention of drugs at any time, any where.
Drug use was done by the insane, and they were locked up.

They are all about Love, peace, and happiness.
All you need is love!

I wish I could be in the 60's again.

We're still about.Older, maybe wiser, but quietly doing our thing. You don't even realise how much of the counter culture became mainstream. Somewhat ironic.

Well friend, it is difficult because hippies was an external and artificially created term ..invented and given by the establishment to basically discredit groups of both free thinking people and also sadly freeloaders ... who seeked to live in a more open and different way to the establishment...which typically got lost and confused in the mix.

After they got out I became friends with a guy, Charles who was in prison with Leary and Baba Ram Das(Richard Alpert). He had spent time in Laguna beach with those 2. Before Leary died I heard him speak in Austin. I left half way thru, he didn't make much sense.

I remember reading my history book in high school when i lived in California, 11th grade, there was a part in San Fran (can't remember the name of the district) where LSD was legal. I do know during the Vietnam war, all the real hippies moved up north to places like humbodlt county and forested areas to draft dodge, grow pot, and live tax free. THOSE are the real hippies.

Well I have three uncles that were and one that still is a hippie....they were hard core into the drugs........one died.
