Flood Ravaged Fiji Now Facing A Cyclone
Australians are being evacuated from Fiji, due to major flooding, and now a cyclone is headed for them. This will put further strain upon what is already a natural disaster.

Fiji is bracing for more bad weather as a tropical depression tracking towards the main island of Viti Levu is expected to intensify and turn into a cyclone.

A state of natural disaster has been declared for most of Fiji's Western Division after heavy flooding killed four people and forced thousands into evacuation centres.

A tropical cyclone alert was issued by Fiji's Meteorological Service overnight.

More heavy rain and squally thunderstorms are also expected, with the possibility of more severe flooding of major rivers, streams and low-lying coastal areas.

Flood-ravaged Fiji struggles as cyclone bears down

By Neil Sands (AFP) – 7 hours ago

NADI, Fiji — Fiji struggled Monday with devastating floods that have brought the country and its tourist industry to a standstill as authorities warned that conditions could worsen with a cyclone bearing down.

Cyclone Daphne is expected to compound the damage in the South Pacific nation, where a state of emergency is in force and flash floods have claimed at least three lives and forced 8,000 people to seek refuge in evacuation centres.

Re: Flood Ravaged Fiji Now Facing A Cyclone
This is the worst flooding in Fiji in living memory and the damage is unbelievable.

The seawall is broken in Wailoaloa and Nadi town is under 6.2 meters (20.3 feet) of water.

For the first time Tavua town is now currently flooded. Officer in charge Joseph Law confirmed that this the first time for flood waters to reach Tavua Town and its knee depth. It is currently raining very heavily in Tavua Town.

Intermittent torrential rainfall from Wednesday night turned towns and communities into lakes as fast rising floodwaters early Friday morning submerged homes, swept away cars and people and sent home owners and their families seeking refuge atop the roofs of their homes.

Many said they were unprepared as water entered homes.

Last night Nadi, Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki were still under water.

As rain continued incessantly, there were fears of renewed flooding at midnight last night.

All Fijians are to take every precaution.

Provincial development permanent secretary Inia Seruiratu said that this current flood is worse than the floods in January and in 2009.

Seruiratu said that Government is contemplating declaring a state of natural disaster in parts of the western division.

He said government is trying its best to attend to those affected by the floods in the western division.

The water came in heavy and fast, inundating streets and buildings in just a matter of hours and the rains came just two months after a flood that left eleven people dead.

But eyewitnesses say this storm appeared even worse - with twice as much water in half the time.

“This is the worst in living memory and the damage is unbelievable,” says resident Dorsami Naidu. “Every shop in Nadi would have been affected and a lot of shops would have lost all their items.”

Many were left stranded in the second storey of buildings by the rising waters.

People are being warned to brace for more rain in the coming days.

A severe flooding warning remained in place with heavy rain and squally thunderstorms forecast to hit the island group on Sunday, the Fiji Village website reported.

Heavy rain continued in Nadi, which was under about 1.8m of water, with levels still rising.

The town of Ba was similarly inundated.

The Rewa River was also rising to dangerous levels, though conditions had eased in Tavua.

Nadi Airport was open to departing flights but all inbound Air Pacific flights had been cancelled on Sunday.

Heavy rains from Wednesday caused rivers to burst their banks in the west of the main island Viti Levu.

Water levels were higher than those experienced during a six-day deluge in January which claimed 11 lives, meteorologists said.

Thanks Bio, I was just looking for some more links. The scenes shown on TV here in Australia were incredible. I wasn't able to find an article which portrayed it as well as the ones you have found.

More rain, and wind, on top of what they have had, will create even more chaos.

Re: Flood Ravaged Fiji Now Facing A Cyclone
Flood-ravaged Fiji declared a state of emergency on Sunday and warned tourists to stay away for the time being, as heavy rain and high winds continued to pound the South Pacific nation. Officials said they could not guarantee visitors' safety in the wake of flash floods that have killed at least two people and forced more than 5,000 to take shelter in evacuation centres. With roads to the international airport in Nadi cut off and extreme weather expected to continue until Tuesday, officials asked airlines not to bring in any more tourists until Monday at the earliest. "This action is being reluctantly taken by the Fijian government to ensure the safety and convenience of international visitors and Fijian citizens seeking to return to Fiji," Tourism Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said. The request is believed to be unprecedented for tourist-dependent Fiji.

Re: Flood Ravaged Fiji Now Facing A Cyclone
Cyclone Daphne has skirted Fiji and has not caused the damage that was forecast on Monday.

However, the Fiji Met Service says an associated trough has brought heavy rain and strong winds.

It says severe flood warnings are still in place for parts of the country.

Strong winds and heavy rain are expected again on Tuesday, but with rain more intermittent.

The Red Cross estimates about 8000 people are using evacuation centres.

The military government says the number is fluctuating as people seek assistance and then return to their flooded homes.

Qantas offers to rescue Aussies in Fiji

Updated: 05:07, Tuesday April 3, 2012

Qantas has told the federal government it will put on relief flights if needed to collect up to 2000 Australians stranded in flood-stricken Fiji.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has told Foreign Minister Bob Carr the airline will provide any necessary relief flights as tourists scramble to escape the disaster.

The airline does not operate regular flights to and from Fiji.

'At this stage we have not received a formal request from the Department of Foreign Affairs to schedule extra flights, but we will continue to hold regular discussions with them as the situation develops,' Qantas said on Monday night.

Senator Carr said earlier he was heartened by the message from Mr Joyce.

'There are a lot of frustrated Australians who just want to get home,' he told reporters on Monday.

He said he was confident Australians who wanted to get out would be able to, and there was no need for a government-supported evacuation.

But he also warned of more bad weather on the way. Meteorologists have warned a tropical depression is forming which could turn into Cyclone Daphne.

'The cyclone expected in 24 to 48 hours is likely to delay flights but how long we just don't know,' he said.

Senator Carr has also announced $1 million worth of emergency aid - in the form of blankets, tarpaulins and water purification tablets - for Fiji.

Deaths feared as severe storm hits Fiji
A severe storm is causing massive disruption across Fiji and there are mounting fears of a big death toll.

The major towns of Nadi, Sigatoka and Rakiraki are under water and news websites report dozens of people are trapped in the fast rising waters, sitting on roof tops and hanging on to trees, waiting for help.

Ulita Meqei told the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) that her brother and two other families - including seven children - were stranded in Nadi and have been calling for help since this morning.

Fifteen people were also stuck in a house in Navakai, with a resident Mohammed Kasim saying it was one of the worst floods they have experienced.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was set to visit the flood stricken areas in the west tomorrow, and was waiting for advice from the Roads Department as road closures were hindering travel plans

Two men found dead in Fiji flooding
.

Damage is substantial across most urban areas on Viti Levu and rivers are now rising rapidly near the capital Suva and Nausori.

The Ministry of Information said the body of a Fijian man has been retrieved from his vehicle after it was swept away by strong currents yesterday in Nadi.

The body of a 20-year-old Fijian man was also retrieved yesterday, from the Raviravi Creek in Ba.

A diabetic 57-year-old woman died in an evacuation centre, however her death was attributed to her medical condition.

The deaths are the latest toll for Fiji. In January, 11 people died in a severe storm across the western area of Viti Levu. However, the latest storm is showing signs of being far worse.

Nearly 7000 evacuated in Fiji

Officials are considering declaring a state of emergency where flooding has killed three people, damaged homes and forced nearly 7000 people into evacuation centres.

A severe flooding warning remained in place with heavy rain and squally thunderstorms forecast to hit the island group today, the Fiji Village website reported.

Heavy rain continued in Nadi, which was under about 1.8m of water, with levels still rising.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said there were 433 New Zealanders registered to be on the island, with 118 in Nadi. But it was not aware of any needing Government assistance.

''New Zealand is concerned about the severe and worsening flood situation in the west of Fiji and the impact on local communities.''

''We have made contact with a number of New Zealanders and at this stage, we are aware of no New Zealanders who have been injured or whose safety is seriously at risk.''

New Zealanders were advised against all tourist and non-essential travel to parts of the Western Division of Viti Levu, including Nadi and the Coral Coast, most severely affected by flooding.

Air New Zealand was forced to cancel flights in and out of Fiji yesterday, forcing stranded passengers to wait another night on the battered island.

The airline had hoped to send an empty plane over last night to pick up the passengers, but the flight had to be cancelled due to bad weather.
