My Turn - Two and a Half Days Without a CIGARETTE
I was a smoker in my teens and early 20s, and I quit for about 7 years. Then, after losing my mom unexpectedly, I started again. I had my last cigarette at 10:30a on Dec. 24. No nicotine replacement... just cold turkey. This sucks so much more than I remember it. I keep flip-flopping between wanting to do this for my kids and thinking that I really don't want to quit. But withdrawal is so hard, and I don't want to go through it again, so I hope I can stick with this. Anyway, I'm just putting it down in writing somewhere because I need to channel my restlessness.

Re: My Turn - Two and a Half Days Without a CIGARETTE
I smoked on and off for 15 years. I hit 30 and quit cold turkey. I got a little calendar and crossed off each day and circled each third day when i would normally buy a pack. pretty soon I had a lot of crosses and circles and the money savings began to add up to the hundreds of euros. anytime I felt like caving in and buying a pack I would look at the calendar and see all those crosses. that was three years ago.

I have WAY more energy at 33 than I had at 23.

food and drink tastes better.

coughing up weird shit in the morning does not happen.

my breath is great instead of smelling like a bulgarian abattoir.

i'm not preachy and self righteous and I dont lecture those who choose to smoke, you have to be ready to start smoking and you have to be ready to quit. its your choice.

Also think about what kind of self-issues smoking might have helped you to self-medicate for psychologically, what else besides smoking would help you overcome them, and why those things haven't happened for you and how they really could.

Know that you CAN do more.

Congratulations and be strong. I smoked for 21 years and have been smoke free for just over 1 year now. I tried Chantix, Zyban, the patch... In the end I just stopped cold turkey. Best of luck.

My thanks to you.

I think, psychologically, I feel like if I quit, I'm accepting my mom's death finally. It's crazy what associations we make.

Thanks for the link, too. I think I've read those, on a different site or sites, about 10x this day trying to remind myself it's not worth starting all over again...

I do know I can do this. Again, thanks.

It's been 11 years of not smoking tobacco for me. It took me several attempts, one was a 7 year span as well. All it took was one cig to get me going again. The last and successful time was with the help of Zyban. Good luck OP, it's a hard addiction to break.

I used the gum to quit. It might be easier for you to use the gum for a few weeks and then slowly lower your nicotine. The key is SLOWLY lowering your daily dose of nicotine. You can do it, I smoked for 10 years.

Congratulations to all of you who have conquered this demon. You inspire me, and I do appreciate the support. I think the key is "whatever works for you." I hope I don't put on 20lbs doing it, but I'm glad I posted, b/c you have helped me.

I'm going to go play a board game with my kid. hf

I was afraid that I would gain weight and have sinus problems after I quit, but I actually lost a little weight. I can breathe better and I have better sense of smell. You WILL have some anxiety issues. There is a drug called vistaril that will kill the anxiety and it will make you feel better. It is basically antihistamine and is used for anxiety and other things like runny nose and watery eyes.

I quit ten years ago.

Drink plenty of water to flush out the nicotine. Stay away from alcohol.

Good luck :)

You know you don't REALLY want to quit. Your metabolism will slow and the pounds will start adding up. You are also a lot harder to get along with without the smokes. Ciggys are your friend!

My strategy is to use Sweedish snus for awhile instead of gum or patches. Cheaper.

OP, go to a website called whyquit.com. It will help you. Look over Joel's stuff. I think what helped me the most is that he said, no one really wants to smoke, they just don't want to go through withdrawal. That was so true, OP. I thought that I wanted to smoke, but Joel was right. I just didn't want to go through withdrawal and I was addicted, very badly.

I quit and I will stay off them this time. Cold Turkey is the only way to go and you can do it, OP. Just Never Take Another Puff!!!

I'm sick of slimy little bastards like you who have never smoked and really know nothing about it except for what you have been brainwashed into believing by the MSM on here badmouthing smokers. Sure there are negative side effects. There are positive side effects too and that's a FACT.
We are all going to die someday. I hope I die before I'm laid up in a nursing home and don't even know my own name anymore. I'll not be dictated to or browbeat by you or the MSM how to live my life so fuck off.

Oh that's bullshit. My dad has smoked his whole life and is still going strong in his eighties. Still lives totally independently. My mom died earlier this year from esophageal cancer and she never smoked. They said it was probably from acid reflux. Face it you are going to die whether you smoke or not. It's all a crapshoot. Cigarettes are the bad guy because they figured out they could tax the shit out of them. Alcohol is fine though.
