If it's true that they were trying to assault/rob the U.S. official, and were also armed (the report details that the two assailants were chasing the official shot into his vehicle), then they got exactly what they deserved. Must not be safe to travel about Pakistan if you're a government official (Mexico?), which is obviously what the man understood; otherwise, he wouldn't have felt the need to carry protection.
