Get an outdoor boiler or outside forced air wood furnace. My fireplace was a pain in the ass and too much mess inside the house.

Wood is split, fire stoked back up to around 400ºF on the stack thermometer...

I feel your pain, brother. It's only 55F this morning, at my place. I had to put on a sweat shirt!

It's a fun job ain't it? LOL! I look like a coal miner when I'm done. Fortunately, I can do mine from the basement on up. So, I don't have to risk getting up on an icy roof or battle the elements. Unfortunately, one mistake and I have a huge mess to clean up inside.

Last year I didn't run the gas furnace at all, all winter. Felt good too.

My chimney is really a 6 inch ID metal stack, and it is connected to my old Ashley wood 'furnace'...Inside the house is straight walled uninsulated pipe up to the ceiling/roof...Where it goes through the roof is an insulated collar, then outside above the roof is 10 feet of double-walled MetalBestos insulated stainless steel pipe that is rated for 2000ºF for 30 minutes...



I have to get on the roof, and take down the upper sections as a unit...I use a 6" round brush on a fiberglass rod to swab the inside of the upper section to remove the buildup...I then run the brush down to the elbow at the back of the stove...I reassemble it all, come inside, and then reach into the stove and scrape the creosote that I pushed down to the elbow into the firebox...I then relight the fire and get it about 400º for a while to burn off the creoste in the firebox...

The only dirty part is sticking my arm up to the shoulder into the stove and scraping flakes out of the elbow on the stack...I take my shirt off, and then rinse myself up to the shoulder in the shower...



I've seen lots of weird stuff over the years...But I have waited for this fat guy for nearly 50 years without so much as seeing a deer track on my roof...

I'd settle for 10 above...

Still only 6.1º here...At least the snow is staying south...

I am lucky in that there is no ice on the roof at all today, and the entire process takes maybe 15 minutes...
