(OP) User ID: 787949 United States 12/13/2009 02:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I sometimes find it easier to be around animals than people lately lol....yes I love the idea of "free range"....the cages are awful. I'd love to get a vet on staff so we could expand beyond dog and cats rescues only. I have some fund raising ideas...just really not the time in the economy where people have the money left over to be generous. A friend of my hubby's purchased a piece of property that the state is now renting from him to NOT cultivate or change....now that's the set-up I wish I could find. The rent from the state pays for his mortgage! He just kind of fell into it so not having any luck finding out how to do that. User ID: 717743 United States 12/13/2009 06:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Free range only works in theory. The reality is that many animals that you will receive will not be socialized to other animals. Horses will fight, kick, and even attempt to kill one another if the herd is unhappy with new member(s). Same thing applies to any species. You most likely will need licenses, check your local laws. And of course pay fees, plus the property, taxes, blah. Then there is feed/food plus you will need to hire folk to help you attend. Then you need veterinarian(s) attending or on staff. Either way you go (profit or nonprofit) you will be relying upon the help of charitable individuals/groups. Keeping critters is expensive, the old adage there ain't no such things as a free puppy plays here. Unfortunately most of the animals you will get will have most likely been medically neglected. In order to keep groups, herds, packs, bevies, prides, murder, etc. and all of the other names for animal groupings you will have to have all incoming animals shot and checked for things like distemper, lock jaw, Feline Leukemia, and all of the other assorted critter diseases depending on each species you keep. One animal can infect a whole herd/gaggle/shrewdness(apes)/sleuth, sloth (bears)/clowder (cats)/ mob (deer)/ raft (otter) and the other god only knows how many different groupings of critters there are. A harras of horses can easily succumb to Vesicular Stomatitis (more horse diseases: [link to www.greenhorn-horse-facts.com] What I am stressing here is the daunting physical dealing with the animals part of the matter, not even touching on the logistics of keeping animals, feeding them, and collecting them plus putting them up for adoption. There is a very good reason why there is a 3 to 30 day 'euthanize' protocol for shelters. The sheer number of abandoned, abused, neglected animals is appalling, unbearable, and no facility can keep up especially during seasonal animals like rabbits. Easter is the very worst - rabbits are bought as pets, the family finally learns that rabbits are not really house breakable, or they buy two rabbits and end up doing rabbit multiplication. Its really, really terribly sad what happens. I strongly suggest you volunteer to work at your nearest animal shelter. If there are no openings then offer cups of coffee and a patient ear to hear what those who work there have to say about the day to day intake of critters. They will tell you the facts that older dogs and cats are often passed over when it comes to 'adoption'. Further many will tell you about the horrors they have seen coming in, abused, beaten, neglected animals - some so sick and abused that 'putting them to sleep' is the only available real option for them. Yes I know you heart bleeds for the critters, and you may actually think you have the stomach to deal with it. I takes a special sort who can keep their perspective when being a one person audience to the cruelties of the world, especially day after day of seeing the same old tiring horrors that people can do. I did hospice for a decade, I knew what I was getting into seeing human being suffer with terminal no win diseases. Around the 5th year I was drinking rather heavily. by year 7 I was becoming somewhat jaded. By year 11 I walked away, my heart had seen enough. I would imagine that the same thing can happen to a person dealing with distressed critters. I'm not trying to kill your dream, I'm trying to get you to weigh in your heart what type of person you are, what type of person you think you will become in 10 years if you see too much horror. Sadly too many in these areas that see day to day horror shows end up being hardhearted (jaded) in order to protect themselves. As for an option on how you MIGHT be able to swing this. not only take in the old, sick and abandoned critters, but also considering putting aside part of your parcel to horse boarding. 16 horses can generate an income of around $30,000 a year (after the expenses of keeping the horse). If you have the land, then you may already qualify for a loan (small business loan) on starting up a stabling/ranch. A bank may be more interested in this line of business over a animal shelter. After you have been in boarding and tending of horses that are owned and being paid for, then you may want to expand. Mind if you do not have the land already this becomes a lot harder to convince a bank that you are the right person to start such a business. (OP) User ID: 787949 United States 12/13/2009 03:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | thank you for your input Wraithwynd...your words ring true on so many levels....I actually am pulling away (a lil hard hearted to protect myself) from people because it is so painful to watch the suffering. Not being able to change or offer much hope. I find it incredibly frustrating and stressful. I find I am somewhat of a sponge...I seem to absorb all that helplessness and pain from the people I work with on a daily basis. The stress is starting to affect my health and I recognize it is time for me to let go and change course. As for the boarding LOL I have actually thought of that too. I am still in the very beginning stages of this dream. So I am definitely not tied to any vision...just throwing ideas of what I'd like to see happen. I am adaptable to changing needs too though. Thank you again for the guidance. <3 "We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children"--Native-American proverb People were created to be loved while things were created to be used. Now I just have to figure out how to get started. lol.... btw...have been having some coinky dinks showing up lately. Thought I'd share one small one I have been practicing listening to my first impressions with some pretty remarkable results. It's a little hard to block out your normal logical reaction but here's how I have been practicing...I know you all know about facebook well the zoo app on there let's you collect these treasure chests daily for points. When I go to a new page to collect. I force myself to pick the one I was drawn to first (kind of an inner battle between logic and feeling lol) anyway....when I have been trusting my gut reaction I have been getting hits the first time always......kinda freaked me out at first. Now I am applying that same method of discernment to other areas in my life and finding that paths/things that are not suited well to me always have a form of repellant conversely the paths (choices is prolly a better word) there is a distinctive draw. Anyway thanks for all the well wishes and advise~!
