If there's nobody around to prevent the idiots from firing over your head, OP, that means there's nobody around to catch you returning fire. That's what I always did with drunk hunters. Actually, there are laws against people firing within a certain distance to any residence and it might differ from state to state and county to county so you should by all means find out what your own are.

When my mother had some trouble with shooters too close to her house, which is next to the woods, the Sheriff just told her to shoot out the jerks' tires so he could catch them before they got away.
