Inexpensive alarms for a shop?
I have a small shop that I would like to better protect from potential break-ins.

It's nothing fancy, it has a few power tools, the lawn tractor and stuff that I really don't want to have to replace again after my ex cleaned me out. I live in a remote area where people party at the creek and wander up our road.

I've installed a door jamb plate to help prevent kick-ins, I bolt the garage door from the inside, the windows are blocked with dowels, and are either covered with blinds or translucent film so no one can see in.

Do those brass covers that go behind the locksets really keep the door from breaking? I might get that too, although a steel door would be nice...but too expensive.

One of the my rottweilers is outside during the day, but both rotts stay inside at night. (The scary one is a spud-but she does the trick when she is called to do so, but ask her to stay outside--unthinkable rolleyes!)

I am planning on replacing the deadbolt with a double keyed lock so someone coming in through a window will not be able to get the door open, but what I am asking about are those window alarms that sound when someone breaks the window---which is about the only way they are going to get in.

Any suggestions on what brand or anything else fairly cheap that will make this shop better protected? Bad times are ahead and I want to cover all my bases.

Bars, on your windows, and walk doors. Garage door lighted well, and an alarm. Even if you cannot afford monitoring, get a real loud siren type alarm.

Total around $1800.

I did this on a property of mine that I am only at half of my time. After I got an old ford tractor stolen.
Fishing and skiing keeps me a little sane.

I would love to have more dogs, but I spend a small fortune on dog food as it is.

I have considered the bars. Sorry about your tractor...I detest thievery.

Get some folks breaking into the shop and let the puppies feast. Problem solved...

I would not want to be on the business end of my big girl. She once killed an adult raccoon...not an easy feat for a dog.

I feel very safe with her in the house.

Well this isn't really an alarm, but a good security product. Many companies such as 3m have window films that prevent the window from shattering. Just do a good search on "3M Safety & Security Window Films" and a bunch of information pops up. I saw it on the discovery channel it looked pretty cool.

Re: Inexpensive alarms for a shop?
google portable travel alarms ..the vibration alarms hang on door knobs or you can hang it on a nail on the door right next to the wood..if someone knocks on the door it should sound off..... make thick shutters for your garage windows ..with cross bars over your shutters ...a dowl is good but put that window cover film over your widow.. use a window pin in your garage window it can work like a patio door pinn..experiment .. put a room monitor in your garage and by your hallway close to den and bedroom.. or put a intercome in.. a one time expense .you can listen to outside noise while any where in your home ..

Re: Inexpensive alarms for a shop?
My dad told me a story about his stocky cattle dog and a coon. Dog weighs about 60-70 pds. He said they fought for around 45 mins and the coon got away. He said that the coon was a hell of a fighter and he has more respect for them now. He was intersted in the outcome, so he just let them go at it.

Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

He was lucky he didn't have to take that dog to the vet for hundreds of stitches or worse! Cattle dogs are tough dogs, I've had a few of my own, but even I wouldn't try that one out.

The only reason my dog suceeded is because she is a 100 lbs of thick, bone-headed Rottweiler, can shake her prey with incredible force and has no fear of pain.

She destroyed a skunk in under a minute, and I've had a boxer shake a skunk and not harm it at all. I didn't plan either fight...she nailed them in the dark in the yard.

Coons can kill dogs!

what is wild is he said his dog did not have a scratch on him and he don't think the coon was injured either. They just wore each other out and didn't ever get a hold of one another. Maybe they were both flexin'?

Oh, yeah the neighbors would love that! Very efficient, though...I can't imagine someone staying inside to steal anything.

Lots of good ideas, however...I'll be Googling some info on all the suggestions.

I would love to have a nice camera system for the whole property with night vision...then I could see if someone is at the gate, or if there are varmints in my veggies.

I don't like lighting up the whole place...I do use motion detection on the shop, and solar around my house...damn neighbors just have to keep a mercury vapor streetlight at their barn on all night, and a neighbor on the hill with a double flood light, argghh...I hate light pollution! It makes it difficult to star watch.

Re: Inexpensive alarms for a shop?
I used to work for ADT and most people don't know you can go out an buy a security system just like they would install on your own and install it yourself.

I would recommend the self contained, wireless GE Simon 3 system. You can set up door, window, and motion detectors.

If you have a phone line in the shop you can set it up to call you and when you answer, will tell you what sensor is triggered.

You can set it up as a silent alarm so it will call you and you can call the Police yourself, or respond yourself.

Of course you can still have it call you and it has a 120db siren.

You can probably get a keypad and all the sensors on Ebay for a pretty good deal.

kitty OPie, forget the rest. This is what you need...

Zec 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
Psa 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God.
Jer 6:2 I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate [woman].
STOCK UP NOW. You should have at least 6 months worth of basics for every member of your household. Stay away from crowds when trouble starts, do not forget water storage, tobacco is worth more than gold or silver, and be kind to hungry children.
