Bloomington, IN, Newspaper to Publish Map of Gun Owners' Addresses
They've just made it a whole lot easier to be a criminal in Indiana. Now, all a would-be burglar has to do is consult an internet database to find his next victim, and he can be assured the residents will have no way to defend themselves.

Good job, Herald-Times. You just guaranteed more gun sales in your state. I nominate you for second place for next year's "Gun Salesman of the Year" award. A distant second, of course, to our esteemed president.

Bloomington, Indiana Herald-Times Treats Law-Abiding Gun Owners like Registered Sex Offenders!

Tuesday, December 01, 2009

On November 30, 2009, the Bloomington Herald-Times made the following announcement:

“This week, HeraldTimesOnline.com will launch its new gun permit database. You’ll be able to search gun permit records by county, city or town and street."

The Herald-Times has begun receiving calls and emails, and their response is a defiant defense of their online gun permit database.

Anyone who visits the newspaper website will be able to search the number of permits on a given street or neighborhood. Although at this point the names and house numbers are not listed, the newspaper’s website treats law-abiding Indiana gun owners like sex offenders on a searchable database.

It is NRA's firm belief that there is no public good served by the publishing or cataloguing private citizens’ gun ownership information, and that more harm is done by such an action. Law-abiding Hoosiers should not be subjected to the same treatment as sex offenders, and if the newspaper won’t listen to their constituents and customers, then NRA Members and Indiana gun owners should send a financial message by cancelling their subscriptions to the Bloomington Herald-Times.

They actually seem to think that people are going to consult this database and avoid living in neighborhoods with "too many" gun owners. Are they insane? As if knowing that your law-abiding neighbor has a gun is even remotely a problem for anyone who isn't a pantywaste pinko commie.

This is actually good, in a way. Besides guaranteeing more gun sales among the good guys, it will also guarantee that the pinkos stay out of decent, God-fearing American neighborhoods.

I wonder if Scott owns a gun, and if not, I wonder how he feels about his own newspaper letting every rapist and burglar in the state of Indiana know that he's left his family defenseless.

Unintended consequences, indeed.

If you live in Indiana, don't wait. Make sure you get yourself a gun before they publish this list. You can pretty much guarantee you'll never have to use it, because all the criminals will be heading next door to rob your liberal neighbor.

Reminds me of the fake sticker ... one we should probably have printed up for real:

A gun on a yellow background with a red circle with a line drawn through it across the gun and a statement below: We do NOT believe in guns.

Make that sticker available for people to put on their front doors ... that way the criminals would know who was unarmed and not likely to resist!

That's effectively what the Herald-Times is doing. Unfortunately, all those unarmed people don't have a say in the matter.

These journalists are so afraid of guns, and think that everybody who owns a gun is a potential threat to them, that they willingly and blindly endanger all the non-gun owning citizens of their own state.

It depends on the state. In Alabama, for example, we don't have to register, unless we want a concealed carry permit. In Indiana, who knows?

There is no gun registration in Indiana, or most other states.

The only records that are supposed to be kept are the 4473 forms (background check questionnaire), by the retail establishment from which the gun was purchased. The state and federal governments are prevented by law, supposedly, from compiling those forms and data.

What they want to publish is the list of concealed carry permit holders.

Thanks for the clarification, ET.

What a joke. Do they have any statistics on how many concealed carry permit holders commit violent crimes? I would imagine it would be pretty close to zero, excepting a rare domestic issue.

First time you buy a gun in Indiana you need ID. Now if I buy a shotgun at Walmart,to hunt on my own property,no permit is needed. If I need my hand gun/shotgun repaired, going to a firing range (or any other reason I take it off my land) I will need a consealed permit to drive to the repair store.
