India launches its first nuclear-powered submarine

India has launched its first nuclear submarine as the country seeks to reinforce its military prowess in the face of competition from regional rivals.
The 6,000 tonne Arihant - which means ‘Destroyer of Enemies’ in Sanskrit - was officially named on Sunday in the southern port city of Visakhapatnam.
India joins a select club of nations with the capacity to develop nuclear submarines. Until now, only the United States, Russia, France, Britain and China had the technology for such submarines.
