+1 - just look at some of the news various nights here on GLP: mother murders infant and eats its brains, father eats eyeballs of 5 yo son, pedophile priests & rabbis, father rapes 3 day old baby, etc.,etc.,etc.

I think it may be time to hit the reset button.

Re: What are the marks of a sick culture?
"What are the marks of a sick culture?"

. . . abridged (by Bob God) from Friday by Robert A. Heinlein:

I took these quotes from one of my favorite Heinlein novels, Friday. They are all from a conversation between the main character and her "Boss." That conversation began with Friday's Boss asking her, "What are the marks of a sick culture?"

"It is a bad sign when the people of a country stop identifying themselves with the country and start identifying with a group. A racial group. Or a religion. Or a language. Anything, as long as it isn't the whole population."

"A very bad sign. Particularism. It was once considered a Spanish vice but any country can fall sick with it. Dominance of males over females seems to be one of the symptoms."

"Before a revolution can take place, the population must loose faith in both the police and the courts."

"... High taxation is important and so is inflation of the currency and the ratio of the productive to those on the public payroll. But that's old hat; everybody knows that a country is on the skids when its income and outgo get out of balance and stay that way - even though there are always endless attempts to wish it way by legislation. But I started looking for little signs and what some call silly-season symptoms."

"I want to mention one of the obvious symptoms: Violence. Muggings. Sniping. Arson. Bombing. Terrorism of any sort. Riots of course - but I suspect that little incidents of violence, pecking way at people day after day, damage a culture even more than riots that flare up and then die down. Oh, conscription and slavery and arbitrary compulsion of all sorts and imprisonment without bail and without speedy trial - but those things are obvious; all the histories list them."

"I think you have missed the most alarming symptom of all. This one I shall tell you. But go back and search for it. Examine it. Sick cultures show a complex of symptoms as you have named . . . But a dying culture invariably exhibits personal rudeness. Bad manners. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters. A loss of politeness, of gentle manners, is more significant than a riot."

"This symptom is especially serious in that an individual displaying it never thinks of it as a sign of ill health but as proof of his/her strength. Look for it. Study it. It is too late to save this culture - this worldwide culture, not just the freak show here in California. Therefore we must now prepare the monasteries for the coming Dark Age. Electronic records are too fragile; we must again have books, of stable inks and resistant paper."

Here is a brief "Laundry List" of the Top Ten symptoms to look for in your own life that may be indicators that we live in a Sick Culture:

Particularism - Identifying one's self with a particular group, religion, race or language, rather than with the whole population.

Dominance of males over females.

Loss of faith in the Courts and Police.

High taxation.
Inflation of currency.

Violence - eg. muggings, sniping, arson, bombing or terrorism of any sort.
iots of course.

Conscription, slavery, arbitrary compulsion and imprisonment without bail and without speedy trial.

Personal rudeness.

... and the number one symptom that we're living in a Sick Culture is -

Bad manners.

That ought to narrow it down for you!

Re: What are the marks of a sick culture?
This is a GREAT topic. Here is my view.

The hallmark of a sick culture is one that blocks spiritual/character development. Psychiatry, and to a lesser extent psychology in many of it's forms are the biggest demons on this front. They institute a culture of judgement, of looking for "normalcy" and literally disrupting peoples' consciousness with intrusive drugs if they are not classified as normal. The definition of mental illness grows each year, it is broadened again and again, and furthermore there is a HUGE HUGE HUGE industry in selling these drugs.

This is the sickest thing in the world so far. In order to develop spiritually there must be birth pangs, there must be a bit of pain at least and peiods of vast confusion. Psychiatry sees these developments and steps in and numbs your mind. It is arresting our development as humans.

Re: What are the marks of a sick culture?
I don't know the origin of this quote, but I've seen this in a few places, and it really seems to explain things very well:

'Each of the great civilisations of the world passed through a series of stages from their birth to their decline to their death.

Historians have listed these in ten stages:

Bondage to spiritual faith, great courage to liberty, to abundance to selfishness, to complacency to apathy, to moral decay to dependence, and back to bondage.'

...Sadly, modern western civilisations currently seem to be at the end of stage 9, going into 10.

Excellent. I would add:

Poor treatment of the vulnerable: elderly, children, sick, women, disabled, immigrants, homosexuals, minorities, poor, and animals.

Environmental destruction.

Rigid religious beliefs and stereotypes.

Profit as a primary motivation.

Infidelity/divorce, lack of permanent commitment

I've had many homosexual friends in my life, some I have known since I was under 10 and grew up with, and later in their life they revealed they are homosexual.

From my experience, homoesexuals are twisted. They suffer inside and they are lost, and as sad as it is to say they are fundamentally unforgiving people.

We all know homosexuality is twisted, we have to think and talk about it extensively to convince ourselves otherwise.

It's not natural, and it should not happen. The same goes for lesbians. They deprive the world of true love in selfishness, in a vain hope of loving themselves and the truth is they are just self absorbed and they are scared of love.

Sure it could be. But the fact remains that the act of homosexuality indicates a gross confusion of the spirit, whether self induced or promoted by the culture, it remains as it is, and it's not natural or healthy. The culture is definately polluted and opposes love, no doubt about that.

In my view what is more apt is to say that when people start judging others and associating them with traits they do not posess or alliegance to philosophies or religions they do not hold.

Prime example is psychology, the psuedo science of judging people on the basis of "people are animals" which they are not.

Fact?

Or opinion?

If it is a fact then somebody better tell nature to cut it out, because it's not natural...

Everything every living being does is natural. There is such a thing as being naturally unnatural.

You could make that assertion for literally anything anyone does.

"somebody better tell nature to stop molesting little children!"

"somebody better tell nature to stop putting jews in ovens!"

You see you're really not saying anything.

People can go against their nature naturally. We have the freedom to do that.

Two male penguins nurturing a youngin is not on par with homosexuality. We are talking about being sexually attracted to a man and unloading your seed inside his butt.

That ain't pretty.

What you're describing is no different than an uncle helping to raise the kids. In pre agrarian societies around the world all the men elders were considered the father, and all the women were your mother. This is just community, not sexuality.

Sure, humans are a type of animal. But what separates us is our sense of knowing what is ethically right or wrong to do.

For myself, my own ethics tell me that it's none of my business what two consenting adults do in their privacy. The key word here being consent.

Rape, molestation....is a lack of consent....and to me that is unethical behavior.

Re: What are the marks of a sick culture?
Furthermore we are talking about romantic love here. When you give your heart to someone you are giving them your spirit, and when that person is a girl and you are a boy their nature is different from yours, and it refreshes that spirit and send it back to you. That's the essence of romantic love, you give as you take.

Love between two men in friendship is more free than romantic love, and you don't have the biological need you do between two lovers for instant reciprocation, so you can love them as you will. When you look at another man romantically, assuming you are a man, you are just taking away that tense heated element between man and woman, which for some and initially many is scary because you dont know if they will reciprocate, and as the opposite sexes do not truly understand eachother you can't just walk away without losing a part of your spirit. With men there is no risk. Sure you can be shot down, but they understand you, and they understand what you are looking for because they have the same biological needs as you exactly.

Homosexuality in animals is not a rolemodel we should look to to justify our behaviour, that is pretty low on the totem pole right there. Homoseuality between two people is born out of fear of the opposite sex, fear of rejection and the unknown, and it is a vain attempt to not give in to your passions and selfishly love yourself. These people aren't in love, they are in lust. They take all the mystery and danger out of it and it is no longer being in love. They may love eachother as friends, but they cannot be in love because they will never have the give and take that naturally flows between the spirits of men and women.

There's a good reason our bodies fit together, it's because our spirits refresh and invigorate eachother.
