It would not generate money, it would save them monet used to lock up potsomkers and weed dealers. Might be pretty close to the same figure.

ciggarette makers make billions on cigarrettes....

it`s like any other commodity....

people pay for quality....

in america it`s a standard rule...
Beyond one's own mind there is no dazzling light to come shining in from outside to wake one up. If one recognizes one's own intrinsic State as pure from the beginning and only temporarily obscured by impurities, and if one maintains the presence of this recognition without becoming distracted, then all the impurities dissolve. This is the essence of the Path-namkhai norbu.

Why is there a legend about the descent of Christ into hell? The Teacher addressed the lower strata of the astral world, saying: Why, by cherishing earthly thoughts, bind oneself eternally to Earth? And many revolted in spirit and rose higher.

Re: Legalizing pot would generate $1.4 billion, Calif. officials say
I'm afraid the $1.4 billion figure is total BS. Most of the figure is based on the price paid and the tax.

But who is going to pay $50 or even $25 an ounce for a plant that grows so easily? People will still be selling it among friends.

The reason given for the proposed law is merely a sop to pretend it would help raise state revenues. It won't.

$50 an ounce is half-price in my neck of the woods. Add friendly competition between manufacturers for better quality. We'll have everything from generic on up to top-shelf. It would end up brand-based, just like everything else (more specifically alcohol and tobacco) You can grow tobacco and you can make your own liquor, but who wants to? Very few. I'll have a box of Kronic 100's please!

Hmmm, true. I'd be willing to pay a base price of 50 an ounce and more depending on quality.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 709964

Keep dreamin, youll be paying 300 an ounce if its legal. Medical weed is already legal out there and they charge 50-75 for 1/8. The article only says the fee is 50$...thats on top of everything else.

LEGAL means government controlled= tax equals money in coffers.
Criminalised=fines and money in the coffers
Decriminalised means no legal crime/offence committed, no tax and no money in their grubby pockets.
So, the grubbyment might be prepared to legalise it now its found itself in a world of shit....and then tax ya for the backflip. And some are suppoting this? Sure.
Whether the status quo remains or it is legalised is open. But one thing for sure is they will not EVER decriminalise it coz they cant screw a red cent out of ya that way.

legalize it and regulate it....

just like beer....

heck....you can even make muffins with it....

it would create a whole world of new business....

the list just goes on and on....

medicine, food, energy....

we need to bring up an open and unbiased public discussion....

so people can see the entire spectrum of benefits...

instead of demonizing it with prejudice....

I'm a nurse. I had a serious GI issue and went from 125 lbs to 104. My doctor prescribed dronabinol (marinnol) which is sythetic THC (pot) to help me regain the weight. I almost had a friggin' stroke when I filled the prescription. THREE HUNDRED AND SOMETHING DOLLARS which is equal to SEVEN DOLLARS AND SOME CENTS A CAPSULE!!! I'm suppose to take one capsule three times a day 30-60 minutes before meals. We discussed the $$ situation and off the record decided it would be cheaper to get some herb, smoke it but keep the prescription, so that if I was drug tested, I wouldn't loose my nursing license.
Here is a bit of TRIVIA about herb. Did you know it has the MOST lanoleic and linoleic essential (body doesn't make it but needs it to function) AND balanced PROTEIN than any of the over three million known edible plant species??? It could feed a starving world!!!! Only the female plants get you high, by the way but the male plants also have the nutritional aspects, as well.
The ONLY reason it was made illegal is because of WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST, the egotistical ass who in 1937 MADE Congress vote it illegal. Dr. Woodword went before Congress to plead that the medicinal value of cannabis was crucial to healthcare. Guess who won??/ $$$$$$$$$$$$
It was the year the Hearst chemist invented the first sythetic fiber. Prior to that hemp was number one, as the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Guttenberg Bible and most other things including clothing were made from Hemp. Read THE EMPEROR WEARS NO CLOTHES by Jack Herer.
Oh, the US Navy, during WWII begged the US population to "GROW HEMP FOR VICTORY" because we were the ONLY and still are, the ONLY industrialized country that doesn't grow it!! We had no supply for the ropes for our ships and a butt load of other items.
ONe acre, harvested twice a year=60 barrels of what is equivalent to crude oil which can power cars and other itmes we need, IT IS TRULY AMAZING THAT THE LITTLE "WEED" COULD ACTUALLY SAVE THE PLANET!!! NO kidding!!!

Please excuse typos

Preach on!

:wonderweed:

Ahh ... SO NICE to see those who see things clearly. I'd love to add a little bit more to what the nurse says about the 'Hemp for Victory' campaign too, did a college paper on that in economics class ... yes, economics ...

It is more important than EVER to understand that right now, HEMP can single-handedly save the entire American economy. It could truly be a 'One Hit' Wonder, no pun intended.

That marijuana is primarily thought of as a drug at all is sheer testimony to the success of those who caused it to be criminalized in the first place.

The original prohibition of cannabis had NOTHING to do with public health or sobriety, as the nurse above eloquently put it ... and had everything to do with several lucrative patents that might not have competed so well in an environment where hemp was still under cultivation.

In fact, the specific patents involved a process for making paper out of wood pulp (most paper had previously been made from hemp), and that new synthetic fiber she mentioned was a new little thing called "NYLON"...go figure we could have been saving trees and rain forests this whole time, right...

So, President Roosevelt initiated that 'HEMP FOR VICTORY' campaign during the 40's that led to wild hemp being GROWN all across the mid-west...and then decades later, that seriously misguided 'war on drugs' the feds created in the 80's allowed the DEA to spend roughly 9 million per year (in 1998-9 figures at the time of my paper) on those SAME HEMP remnants (again, w/ taxpayer dollars) to be eradicated to 'justify' the war. Note that it would take HUNDREDS of pounds for anyone to get high from wild hemp. So all that destruction in the name of what? Politicians keeping office.

bump

Would that I had your eloquence of pen. BRAVO!!
Also, another fact I originally failed to mention was that Hearst owned (ripped off) massive forrests in Mexico that he could not harvest due to Pancho Villa's activites. He would harvest (steal) the lumber, send it to Kimberly Clark (His company) to make paper to sell to the newspapers (yep, he owned them all) so, instead of "drug crazed cocanine negros raping white women", he then started the "drug crazed marijuana smokin' Mexicans raping white women" freak out. Also, marijuana" is a slang Sonoran term. Medicinally, it was Cannabis. Industrial, it was known as hemp. When Dr.Woodward went before Congress to plead for Cannabis to remain a viable medicine, he stated "When the "marijuana" prohibition was stated, we in the medical field did not know you meant cannabis."

Boy, these after thoughts keep coming. Did you know that as far back as Clinton's terms, TWELVE states VOTED FOR MEDICINAL MARIJUANA??? He did the predictable thing (went for the $$$$$$$$$$$ alcohol lobby, pharmaceutical companies with sythetic marijuana Marrinol @ over $7.00 a pill, the tobacco lobbyists etc.) and vetoed the states voters desires. Frankly, I couldn't believe that greasy guy would be against ANYTHING that involved blowin' and suckin'!!!!

If they legalize it. They can also regulate and tax the fuck out of it.

May be a good thing, stop the minors from smoking it.

And maybe the cartels and other criminal elements will start losing control.

But why stop with pot, they should legalize other drugs too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 724227

Agreed. I know people close to me that love heroin ( not me), it is apparent to me that heroin users will do it weather we like it or not. Clean legal drugs mean addicts can basically live in society and get clean drugs and find a more balanced way--kind of like tobacco smokers--to live life. If we legalize it we defeat the terrorists and we stop imprisoning addicts that dont otherwise get in trouble. This can work. End the drug war- people want drugs and as long as its at home and not in a car or at a job, why not let them?
BTW- give half the taxes from the drugs to police, emt's and toward medical system costs. The cops are always killing the efforts--give them money and they might be more understanding....

Imagine how expensive your weed is going to be when walfart is the only legal seller of it. IE you will still get the fucking from the donut heads for "non walfart" weed.
Legalizing use does not mean employer's can't fire you for it , doesn't mean you won't be driving while impaired even if you smoked it 30 days ago , doesn't mean anything at all.
