'Rogue Snowmobilers' Herd, Kill Four Deer in Wisconsin.... FELONY CHARGES DIMISSED?!?!?!
Let me get you all up to speed...

This happened this past January:
[link to www.foxnews.com]

WAUSAU, Wis. — A group of snowmobilers in central Wisconsin herded and killed four deer and severely injured a fifth in what a warden called a senseless act of cruelty on Monday.

No arrests have been made in the Saturday morning incident about five miles south of Waupaca, said Ted Dremel, a state Department of Natural Resources warden.

There's talk of closing all snowmobile trails in Waupaca County until the "rogue snowmobilers" are caught, he said.

"It is senseless. I don't know how else to describe it," Dremel said. "It is probably something they thought was fun or humorous at the time. They did purposely run over these deer. The tracks in the snow were in a circular manner, almost looking like they were chasing the deer back to other snowmobile partners."

Randy Yorkson, who farms the land, said people cannot believe what happened.

"I am going to guess it is somebody who left a bar. They probably had been using that trail before, knowing the deer were out there," he said. "This is just some yahoos who don't have any common sense."

Landowner Virginia Niemuth, 80, immediately shut off access to her property, closing five miles of the main snowmobile trail across Waupaca County.

"There's sick people out there," Niemuth said. "I used to love to snowmobile, but this is too much."

Dremel believes three or four snowmobiles were involved in a roundup of deer in a moonlit alfalfa field where 30 to 40 animals were known to feed. Witnesses reported hearing snowmobiles in the area about 3:30 a.m., he said.

Three deer were found dead in the field. A snowmobile stopped atop one and ripped open its stomach, Dremel said. A fourth deer with broken legs was euthanized.

The fifth deer was dragged from the field and tied to a tree about 25 feet from a road. Investigators think someone may have planned to return for that deer, Dremel said.

"It looked like the deer wrapped itself around the tree and choked itself to death," he said.

Dremel said he has never heard of this kind of "cowboy-style" attack on deer with snowmobiles.

"Usually, it is an accident — a deer standing in a trail and a snowmobiler can't avoid it," he said.

The dead deer included two bucks and three does. One was a fawn.

Investigators have no suspects. Some snowmobile clubs have offered $4,000 in rewards for information leading to arrests, Dremel said. Information can be phoned into the DNR's tip line at 1-800-TIP-WDNR.

"This is not characteristic of the snowmobile community in Wisconsin," DNR Chief Warden Randy Stark said in Madison. "Obviously, we are looking to get any public assistance we can in identifying who is responsible for this."

There was also a few copy-cat attacks that involved killing ducks in small open patches of water with snowmobiles.

Felony charges dismissed in snowmobile deer kill

Waupaca - Five felony charges of cruelty to animals have been dismissed against a man accused of running over and killing some deer with his snowmobile.

Robby Kuenzi's attorney convinced a Waupaca County judge Thursday that because the defendant was hunting at the time of the incident, state law prohibits animal cruelty charges.

Judge John Hoffman conceded and dismissed the felonies. Kuenzi still faces several ordinance violations and four misdemeanors, including hunting out of season.

Kuenzi's brother, Rory, and Nicholas Hermes face similar charges. Four deer were found dead along a snowmobile trail south of Waupaca on Jan. 10, and a fifth had to be euthanized.

That Robby Kunezi guy was hunting on a snowmobile trail... riiiight.

In hunting season they are not really specific about what you can and cannot use to kill the deer.

Unless you are in an area that doesn't allow rifles.

To take this a bit further.

Let's say you were unfortunate enough to hit say three deer with your car and killed them.

Would you want laws in effect to open the potential for felony "deerslaughter"?

Be careful what you wish for.

To take it a little further, hunting already could be extremely cruel.

For instance bow-hunting. It is not uncommon to shot a deer with an arrow and then have to track it two or more miles as the arrow cuts into it and the deer bleeds to death.

That's SOP, should that be a felony also?

To take it even further there is the point to consider that in many areas there are too many deer and hunting is almost a necessity to keep the herd healthy.

Are you serious? They cut open one of the deer for shits and giggles... dragged a deer behind a snowmobile... mind you there was a long trail of blood. I wish I could find the article that had the video. Then tied it to a tree.

Do you not see the cruelty?

I hunt, fuck I love hunting... but for fuck sake... that is ridiculous.

So it's less cruel to stick an arrow in one and let it run for two miles until it bleeds to death?

Apparently you don't get my point.

Maybe you should look at it from the deers perspective.

arrow guns are ethical.
heading for deer on snowmobiles not ethical.
Courts still abide by this. If they do that to deer they will plow kids.

Not to worry. The public outcry is ear-shattering. If they get off the hook, they'd better watch over their shoulders.

Wow, Whitey does have standards after all. Who would have guessed?

He will tell you to go get cancer and die but that doesn't mean he doesn't care about Bambi, lol.

I'm a hunter and I agree. Herding deer and doing what they did should be punished with automatic serious jail time, big time fines, and a life-time ban from hunting in any state.

To defend bow-hunters (from the comment above). Yes, bow-hunting can be cruel if the bow-hunter is an amateur idiot. In any case, bow-hunting takes the most true hunting skill and gives the deer the most chances of survival. Nothing gets shot that is outside of 30 yards away.

Good professional and responsible bow-hunters like myself don't fire unless it is in sure range of a kill shot. And no arrow is released unless it is a kill shot. Death is instantaneous in most cases and usually with no pain.

Bow-hunting is far more humane than gun hunting with hunters firing from scopes 200 yards away.

Trust me, more injured deer have to be tracked by gun hunters than bow hunters. The difference is that the bow-hunters find their deer and gun hunters don't know how and let them suffer.

Even though its hunting season. Around here you arennt allowed to shoot a deer with spots(fawn). Should have gotten a fine or something but karma will fix itself later.

Yeah, huge difference between being shot with a shot instrument and bleeding to death over a period of an hour or more than being run over with a snowmobile.

I'm sure the friggen deer thinks the arrow is much more ethical as it slowly bleeds to death while in severe pain.
