I am a video producer- have any technical questions you need answered?
I've learned a lot in my time at GLP, and I'd like to try to give a little back to everyone. Hopefully this thread can be of assistance to someone.

Here's a little background, so you know where I am coming from and what to expect from this thread:

I have been working in the video production industry for almost 13 years. I got my start labeling videotapes at 16, and moved quickly into learning linear editing & videography. I spent 6 years running a broadcast A-B-C roll suite before I ever started working on a computer, so editing is and will always be my strongest area of knowledge. Nowadays, I do a lot of shooting, animation, motion graphics, editing, live production, conversions, graphic design, web design and so on. I work for a production house during the day, and freelance at night and on the weekends.

I don't claim to know all the answers. What I can tell you is that 9 times out of 10 I can help people troubleshoot and solve their video problems fairly quickly. I do it at work all day long.

So, if you have any questions pertaining to home video production or production in general, please post them. I can't always reply quickly, and I can't know everything- but I will have an answer for you no matter what, even if it involves research on my end (and I learn something new, win-win if you ask me!).

what sort of video set up do I need to shoot orbs moving at night?
I thought about using a strobe light but they might get bloody pissed at me.

Are you familiar with After Effects? If so, how the hell can I cut down on rendering time when I use certain filters, especially fire and lighting effects?
Well it seems so real I can see it
And it seems so real I can feel it
And it seems so real I can taste it
And it seems so real I can hear it
So why can't I touch it?
So why can't I touch it?

Get more ram...

or, do what I do, use a render farm.

You know, I would have LOVED to use a render farm, but if it's not in the budget...

I did move a project over to a machine with way more ram, but it only shaved off a minute or two of render time.

Most consumer-level cameras won't be up to the task. Avoid anything Canon (who make great cameras, just not for night-time). I recently shot with a Sony PD-150 MiniDV in a dark environment, and was surprised at how well it captured the light. If you have a larger budget, you might even consider some of the new SLR's (still image cameras) that also shoot video. These will likely give you the kind of control you need to set the levels just right. I have a friend who has one, I'll have him test that theory.

Are you familiar with After Effects? If so, how the hell can I cut down on rendering time when I use certain filters, especially fire and lighting effects?
 Quoting: Babe in a Bunker

Quite familiar. First, can any of the effects be pre-rendered? I know it's a pain, but it is a good way to reduce the render times. Make sure frame blending isn't on also. If you've done those already, tell me, we'll take it from there.

I have a super-fast quad-core here, so I don't worry about it for After Effects. When I am doing 3D , I use a renderfarm I set up at work. 10 computers render things MUCH faster :)

That's cool, Moncrieff. If only AVS wasn't so limited I'd ask, ahhhhhhh. Budget doesn't allow for anything more.

My Kodak does a pretty good job of night shots, surpised me a lot. Has HD, good for vids, but eats memory and batteries fast. It combines SLR with Point & shoot tech.

That works!
The machine I use when I'm working on some Chyron projects is a 3.2 gig Duo Quad, so it screams along nicely.

I also have 5 other PCs laying around. I have then set up as a render farm when I'm rendering out 1080HD projects in After Effects, or when I'm doing something in C4D

Do you prefer Offline or Online? I do not work in television anymore, but still have family that does and I get to hear them bitch about (not the two actors, but the two producers in the family).

Some think of online as just button pushers compared to the offline non-linear editing. I think it is more costly to make mistakes, lol and more color grading.

Used to be good money in it.

Yep. You know how easy it is to burn through a good production computer. Whenever I retire one, I slap linux on it, and link it up to the system as a slave node.

I've never used C4D. I've heard good things about it, just never had the opportunity. I'm familiar with Maya, I'm slightly more familiar with Houdini, but truthfully, I am a long-time Blender fanatic. I had to get into 3D on my own dime, and Blender hooked me. I still use other ones when necessary, but pretty much my entire motion graphics and 3D workflow is Blender/AFX based at this point.

I like C4 because it's kinda intuitive, and I haven't had the time or intelligence to learn Maya.

 Quoting: Winningjob

Do you mean as in linear or non-linear? Or do you mean online as in computer-controlled as opposed to mostly mechanical?

I started in a simple 2-deck room with a Sony RM-450 and a video toaster 4000 (I still use my Toaster 4000 mousepad here at home!). The room I wound up with later that year was run by a BVE-2000, which was all computer-based tape control. In that regard, give me the online suite any day of the week. You could A-B-C roll with just a simple few button pushes. I loved that you could type in 4 pages of EDL and then sit back and watch it edit itself while you ate lunch.

If you mean on the computer/non computer side, ultimately I prefer non-linear to linear simply because of the control you have. I still miss editing in the old suite though. It was like controlling a large vehicle, you were always flipping switches, changing tape loads, really playing the system. You just don't get that cool feeling with a computer, of having 20 machines wired up and running together to make something happen.

Funny you mention that...

it seems there's a natural rivalry between TDs and editors.

Editors think live TDs are hacks, and the TDs think offline editors are prima donnas.

Living in both words, I see both points, but I enjoy working live more.

The money still isn't bad, just not what it was. And it's only getting worse

First, you need to answer a couple questions for me:

1.) Still or animated?

2.) What is the source you need to make the gif from?

It's nothing like it used to be. When I started at the company I work for, we had 15 full time employees, and about 10 on-call subcontractors. Now, we have 5 employees, and 2 or 3 on-call people. The industry is dying, which is sad. It's not just because of the recent economy either, video as a viable industry has been in bad shape and on a downward decline since around 2000 or so. With the prevalence of cheap home NLE's, most work for a generalist production house has dried up. We've been in business since '86, so we've been able to keep our heads above water, even as most of our competition has not. We had some real close calls last year.

Thankfully, it's been a really busy summer (fingers crossed!).

I'm in the middle of creating a music video of sorts. It is going to end up taking 500 hours of my time, but I wouldn't rather do anything else so that's okay.

It is obvious that hardly anyone is going to watch the thing, but does that really matter at all? If it does matter, is there a way I can pay people to watch it? Kind of like paying to be famous.

Same back at you Art Deco. I'm hoping we're all going to see a little positive hiccup for the summer. I know that makes no sense with all the financial stuff going on, but we can hope. My fingers are crossed for all of you working in production- I know how nervous everyone has been for the last couple of years.

 Quoting: Ossie bloke

You know what? Make the video for you first. You are the only audience who must approve the most basic form. Then, show it to some close friends or family. Get their input, make a few changes, then walk away for a few days. When your head clears from the long edit hours, give it the final once-over. Then, post it on youtube or enter it in some competitions. We have a few areas down here that do locally-produced film festivals, and they love to have any and all content to show. It's a great way to get started and get noticed.

I'll probably destroy any credibility I had by admitting this, but I shot my first wedding in almost 10 years last month. I was bribed, I was weak. I needed the rent $$$, and they had an emergency. I've taken the first step by owning up to it, now I can move on :)

Your's sounds more fun though....
