Anonymous Coward User ID: 617454 United States 08/19/2009 12:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | tobacco seeds are like dust. You have to put about one inch of soil not dirt in a tray about 1ft by 18in and lightly dust the soil with seeds. Lightly mist with water and cover with a clear lid. Mist the lid once a day. They like it humid but not wet. good luck. Its a good trade stoke for hard times and easy to grow. I live in Hawaii perfect for tobacco and other diversified agriculture. lol |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 750774Yeah, good luck! I ordered my seed two months ago, and then again a month later. I have tried growing 4 different kinds, and I can't get anything to come up no matter what I do, and I have tried everything!?!? Take if from somebody in THE biggest tobacco (cigarette tobacco) state in the US....tobacco seeds are tiny. You have to have a magnifying glass to see a little tobacco plant. You have to have transplants to raise tobacco. Years ago, people would have "beds" where they would manually pull transplants up from to replant in the field. I have never heard of anyone who took raw tobacco seed, go out and make row in the garden, plant them and have anything come up. If you want detailed directions on how to have a plant bed, I can tell you but I'm not sure if bromide gas is still available. You might be able to skip the weed killing stage, in which case you can take the seed, mix it up with lime and bagged fertilizer and broadcast it on to the bed. Cover it with canvas and wait. Once a transplant is in your garden, it only take a little while for that seedling to overtake any weeds. Tobacco has wide leaves and will smother anything else out. Especially if it is planted in dense rows. |

You can legally grow something like a half acre for personal use with no tax liability in the US. Cool! Now if I can figure out how to turn tobacco into snuff I'll be set Should be an easy task. I have tried growing 4 different kinds, and I can't get anything to come up no matter what I do, and I have tried everything!?!? I have about 120 plants about 2ft. tall, late start as my first sprouting didnt take back in april so i did it again around the end of june just for practice. I have a green-house im gonna put some in and gonna get started next week on a temp hoop house in the garden for when it starts cooling off. In N.Central Texas we usually dont get our first frost until the end of october,so maybe i can finish them off under cover. I got some really good info off a site called(howtogrowtobacco.com) I put my seeds in small square trays that i saved from frozen pies(large ones)then wet the potting soil/sprinkle seeds mixed with wood ash(or you could use fine sand)but the wood ash i found out helps the seeds germinate better and helps the roots get started quicker. Then i put cling wrap over the top with a dish towel on top of that and left them on my porch for 2 days(no longer)because mold will start growing. But it was nice and warm out at the time. Toabacco seeds needs water and heat to jump start them,as soon as the sprouting starts get them under a grow light if inside with some bottom heat going(growers heating tray)or if ya have one use a heating pad. Another good link is seedman.com also for old style growing i found a great site for info on its history, growing, anything you want ta find out is in this google E-Book Tobacco its history [link to books.google.com] |

It is also a quick growing crop. Granted there is some risk and a hard late or early frost can do quite a bit of damage. However ground that is well sheltered, wind breaks, night coverings, back up seedlings growing in a greenhouse and other modern methods all work well togeather, to make it a viable commercial crop in the more northerly latitudes.. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 750755Tobacco "bases" have not been in acres since the early 70's so you must be talking about a really long time ago. In the 70's all USDA allotments were assigned in pounds. Then in '04 all the bases were bought out. Now it's all grown by contract and you can raise as much as you want. I don't know if tobacco can be grown in Canada but tobacco is a semi tropical plant that likes a lot of hot weather and a long growing season. I suspect your are right. Real estate agents! Here, for the Canada skeptics: By Charles Wyatt - Business Edge Published: 06/23/2005 - Vol. 1, No. 12 EmailPrintComment Tobacco growers, once among Ontario's most prosperous farmers, are quitting in droves. The latest blow came in May when more than 120 tobacco farmers sold their tobacco quota rights to the federal government under the $67-million Tobacco Adjustment Assistance Program. With the provincial government's contribution to the program, farmers received a total one-time payment of $1.72 per pound of production quota. "It is a slow death for Ontario tobacco growers," says Doug Ramsey, chairman of the department of rural development at Manitoba's Brandon University. Ramsey, who picked tobacco as a student, is the author of several research papers on the Ontario tobacco industry. Over the past four years, more than 40 per cent of Ontario's tobacco growers have abandoned the crop, says Jason Lietaer, general manager of the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers' Marketing Board in Tillsonburg. About 650 Ontario farmers will plant tobacco in 2005, down from the approximately 770 who planted last year. In 1998, there were about 1,100 flue-cured tobacco growers in Ontario, while in the early 1990s there were about 1,650. Ontario had more than 4,500 tobacco farms in the 1960s. |

What you don't think there isn't a law for EVERYTHING? In many places there is a law that tells you exactly when to mow your lawn. There is a law that stipulates exactly how many electric outlets you have to put in each room. And there is a law that makes it illegal to sell a house that has uncertified paint in it. |
