What infuriates me is that in the Detroit Public School System, instructors are no longer allowed to correct young adults who use the English language incorrectly. Ebonics or urban dialect is now considered a viable language, and everyone wonders why the children are illiterate.

It IS a viable language. Just not proper English.

Look at Jamaican. A language all its own now, but yet you can still pull out English and other European words and phrases.

who knows..this could be the start for something new right?

I would beg to differ.

There is a difference between "a US citizen" and "an American".

"American" is a culture ... a mind-set ... a way of life.
Infiltrators have been eroding the American culture for several decades now, and many of the "citizens" don't have a clue.

Many become "citizens", yet they reject the American way of life. ... which of course would not be a problem if they did not try to force their alien (alien to the American Culture) way of life onto the Americans.

I suppose the true Americans have now been re-named "Patriots" ... and patriots are now being re-labeled as "terrorists"!

A true American upholds (and fights for) the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.
A true American loves his/her country and the principles it was founded upon.


Of course, this opens up a can of worms re the "invasion" of north america by the emigrants against the Native American Indians.
But that's another topic entirely. sigh

Jurist,when my son was 2 years old, many moons ago, I started teaching him words and reading to him from the newspaper. We also read from children' books but I did not limit him to them.

When he was in grammar school, public education, we required him to learn 10 new words per week. He always has been able to converse with people of all ages and pedigrees with no difficulty.

As he got older,we continued this method.
We never tolerated lazy speech, and when his friends would come over they learned real quick that we would not tolerate it from them either.

It has helped him in college, his writing, job interviews, and well, life.


I blame poor home raising, Rap music, and advancing technologies.


I know some people will consider this a racist comment but it is true.....their is a way of speaking like you are from the hood that has permeated society via hip hop and rap music.

There was a situation where a black man had been accused of acting white or being an Uncle Tom by other blacks for speaking properly and trying to get a college education.

Unfortunately this type of thing is being encouraged instead of discouraged. I know not everything is a conspiracy, but I've always thought that tptb want a dumb populous.


It must really suck to be a middle to high school teacher.

Yes, "American" is a culture and a mindset, but should not be. This is the issue.

Why can't those who prefer a culture different from the American culture relocate to where that culture is practiced?

If, for instance, someone wanted to practice Zen Buddism, that person could either live peacefully in a Zen Buddist community in the US -- of which many exist -- or they could move to a country where it is widely practiced. There is no reason for them to try to convert the entire American Culture to their way of thinking!

That you and most who have commented here have no clue when it comes to linguistics. Shakespeare in its day would have been classified, as you put it, "degenerate" because it was written for the working class masses and was far from the middle and upper class English of its day, yet it is revered as the historical apex of English literary achievement. James Joyce wrote in Irish working-class dialect and is also viewed as one of the English languages greatest writers.

Language is very organic and is dependent upon a range of influential factors in its trajectory of evolution. You can decry what you perceive as society's decline with language as its root cause or a sign of it, but your assertions here are sadly mistaken. I suggest that you stick to law if that is your expertise.
