Linguistic DOOM is just more DOOM that ain't gonna happen. It's all just the natural evolution of language and the rise of regional dialects, and even that's constrained by global language referents in the mass media. |

I typed a thesis for a graduate student some years back that focused on this point ... not "gutter language", per se, but language in general. It seems that if a nation has occupied another nation (as in the case of certain middle eastern nations being taken under the wing of Great Britain), the first thing the occupiers do is force the occupied nation to give up their own language. Studies have been made that prove when a culture is forced to give up it's language, that culture is destroyed. Please don't ask me for links to any of this. I learned this about 35 years ago. Some words will make it into 'society' but only just a few. A lot of urban slang won't be used anymore after a couple of years at most. Replaced by new catchphrases, soundbites, etc. |

Quoting: The JuristGood grief! Language must be preserved, unchanging! It must be kept in a glass case to be admired, but never touched. Shoo! Hands off! ... Are you serious? The development of dialects, vernaculars, and subcultural slang is not a plot by "Them." It's overwhelmingly a development of the lower classes and people on the margins of mainstream culture. Language is a living thing and it must be allowed to change with the times and with the attitudes of the people who speak it. Otherwise, it becomes a prison. |

Then you have to ask if some of the urban dialects allow precision expression or articulate speech. My position is that most people can't talk. I see kids interviewed on TV. It's rare and very refeshing when you see a 7 year old who speaks clearly. The closer you are to grunting, the lower you are. Hows that for a rule? |

There is a reason for this, you know. French was the language of the elite after the Norman conquest of England in 1066. You can still see the separation in some modern English words - "cow," "pig," "sheep," etc. are all Saxon words, but once the peasant kills the animal and brings the meat to the castle for his lord to eat, he has to call it by a French-derived name - beef (boeuf), pork (porc), mutton (mouton). Latin is used in law because it's a dead language - it doesn't change because is not spoken by a people, but by a profession. English is not dead, nor should it be. |

French. This was around the 11th century AD. The Anglo-Saxons were conquered by the Normans (from France). The Anglo-Saxons spoke what is now known as "Middle-English" from then until the 16th century, when it developed into Early Modern English.
