In a mass detention situation, plastic cuffs will be the cuffs of choice,

One person with their hands handcuffed behind their back is not going to be able to make this work, but two people working together will have a shot at it.

Three handcuffed people - including one to insert the pin, one to direct the action - will find this to be a piece of cake.

Usually, but in riot control situations, these are popular, especially if the scene turns violent, because instead of cleaning blood/fluids off them afterward, they can simply throw them away.

As for the pin, you don't necessarily need a small pin like that, anything that separates the roller will work, a metal shim will work fine too. It does take some skill, especially when they're tight, but it is possible to do it if you're creative.

Because you'd most likely see this in riot control situations, chances are you'd have a friend with you, grouped for transport, so practicing with a friend might be a good idea. You can buy these things, security guards sometimes buy them because their companies don't provide any sort or restraints.

As for having a pin handy, a good option is a small safety pin, preferably one of those locking "diaper" kinds that won't pop open randomly (you don't want to jab yourself), attach it to your jeans/pants waistline in the back, and possibly wear a belt over it. While you're waiting for the cops to finish rounding up protesters, you or your friend can access it.

That said, this isn't going to work well for your average arrest, mostly because you won't get much opportunity for escape. Once they handcuff you and put you in the car, a process that's fairly rapid for most arrests, you're done. Most jails receive prisoners in an attached garage, so even if you get out of them in the back of the car, you still have to get out of the garage and away from the jail itself.

Plus, by then they usually have a good idea who you are, so you'll be on the run, which is no fun, especially for minor crimes.

Still, these things are interesting...and considering conditions today, good to know.

You're joking I presume, but I actually ordered one of those lock picking kits....

I was able to unlock anything in the entire office after only 3 days of piddling..


Tell you something else: Master keyed locks are actually easier to pick than ordinary ones..
