Cattle Rustling Increases As Economy Gets Worse
Used to be a law on the books in Texas that was repealed in the 1980's I believe where Cattle Rustlin' was a hangin' offense.

Nowdays we have a sayin' here in Texas.

Shoot em', shovel em', and shut up. ;>)

Cattle Rustling Increases As Economy Gets Worse

There’s no doubt crime picks up during bad economic times.

Including cattle rustling.

From Reuters’ Matthew Bigg yesterday:

When Chrissy and Benny Pinckard woke one morning in March on their small farm in Alabama to find two prized bulls stolen they were distraught.

They were also a statistic.

Cattle ranching is a multibillion-dollar industry in the United States and cattle theft is a small but growing problem as a recession bites and thieves realize that stealing cows is a relatively easy way to raise a quick buck.

Stolen cattle are often loaded onto trailers and taken straight from their farm or ranch to auction at a stockyard, according to detectives involved in tracking thefts.

Identifying those cattle not easy since many are not branded and detectives and owners need to act fast to retrieve the animals before sale — a task made doubly difficult if they have been transported across state lines.

Texas, the nation’s biggest cattle state, reported thefts virtually tripled between 2007 and 2008 to 6,404 head of cattle, according to Carmen Fenton, spokeswoman for the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

But the numbers probably underestimate the problem which is sufficiently serious for the association to have its own rangers working alongside government law enforcement agencies, Fenton said.

Texas has 13.8 million head of cattle which contribute $15 billion to the state’s economy. The state legislature passed a bill in May raising the maximum penalty for livestock theft from two to 10 years in prison, comparable to other states.

According to Fenton, modern cattle rustlers are a far cry from the stereotype of the Old West.

“When people think cattle rustling they think John Wayne,” he said. “But it’s not like that. Cattle thieves are sophisticated and technologically savvy. They know the law and the penal law. They have a truck and a trailer. They take the cattle to the market and sell them for market value that day.”

Bigg pointed out that one other state is seeing a sharp increase in cattle thefts. He wrote:

Iowa, Montana, Washington and the Dakotas were not seeing a sharp rise in thefts but in Missouri, one of the country’s main cattle states, theft is up significantly, said Jess Peterson of the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association.

“You can just go down the road and you can grab cows,” he said.

As for the Pinckards, Bigg noted:

When they discovered their two black bulls, named Arnold and Antonio, were gone, the Pinckards called the police, the sheriff, local television stations, sale barns, the livestock inspection station and local rodeos as well as offering a $5,000 reward.

Three days later two suspects were caught in Georgia and shortly afterward the two bulls as well as other cattle were located on a trailer in a forest safe and well.

Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support!

Re: Cattle Rustling Increases As Economy Gets Worse
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Hard economic times have led to a drastic increase in cattle rustling across Texas and Oklahoma, and Arkansas could be next, warns Tom Troxel, extension professor of animal science for the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.

More than twice as many head of cattle were stolen in Oklahoma and Texas last year as the year before, according to a trade organization. Law enforcers in South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana are also reporting cattle thefts. In Missouri, a recent rash of rustling, especially in the southwestern corner of the state has prompted the Missouri Farm Bureau to offer $5,000 in rewards to catch the thieves. According to the Missouri Cattlemen's Association, since 2004, more than 3,200 head of cattle have been stolen, along with some trailers, trucks and four-wheelers.

"You may have thought cattle rustling was a thing of the past, a common theme in old western movies," says Troxel, "But nothing could be further from the truth."

Agreed on both counts.

A few years ago I know of this old skool rancher (in his 70's) who rolled up on several illegals at night on his ranch that had butchered one of his prize bulls and were cookin' it up in a field on his land. . We are talking the bull was worth several 10's of thousands of dollars. A semen straw from said bull was several thousand dollars.

They were never seen or heard from again.

And that's proper justice in my book.

Happening here in the UK too, Omega.

Started off with the diesel and then the machinery. Now it's the livestock.

In a word, no.

(The 'Barry Martin' case springs to mind - He used deadly force to defend his farm - and got locked up for it. I'm not sure how that panned out.. I'll check later - just on my way out at the mo').

But hey - Now most farmers around here know how to use shovels! ;)

Bring it. Anyone attempting to steal my livestock will be greeted by several 120 lb. fur covered stealth cruise missiles, quickly followed up by tight patterns of buckshot from me and hoof prints from our stud.

attle rustling, then sheep rustling... now bee rustling is the latest crime to hit Britain's rural communities

Thieves targeting farm animals, UK
[link to news.bbc.co.uk]

First it was scrap metal, then oil and now thieves are targeting farmyard animals. Newsbeat's been told that thousands of pigs, sheep and cattle have been taken across the UK over the last year, as the price of meat becomes more expensive.

interesting! I hadn't thought about how attractive stealing farm animals may be to thieves, but like the person from the US Cattlemen's Association said, "you just go down the road and you can grab cows..."

Re: Cattle Rustling Increases As Economy Gets Worse
AUSTIN (May 12, 2009)-- The Texas House Tuesday unanimously voted to enhance penalties for theft of livestock.

Current law punishes cattle thieves with a third-degree felony, which is punishable by as much as 10 years in prison and a fine of as much as $10,000 if they steal more than 10 head of cattle, horses or exotic livestock.

Under the bill approved Tuesday, any theft of cattle, horses or exotic livestock would be a third-degree felony.

The bill would also make it a third-degree felony to steal more than 10 head of smaller livestock such as sheep, goats and pigs.

Current law requires a theft of more than 100 head of sheep, goats or swine before it is a third-degree felony.

The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association applauded the House vote, saying that though Texas is the largest cattle producer in the nation, it is more lenient on cattle theft than neighboring states.

The association says rustling is on the rise and cattle raisers reported 6,404 thefts to the association in 2008, more than twice as many as in 2007.

The Senate has already passed the bill. It now heads to the governor for consideration.
