Last pickup rolls off GM assembly line in Oshawa

After 44 years of production, it was the end of the line Thursday for the General Motors truck plant in Oshawa Ontario.

The final pickup truck rolled off the assembly line around the lunch hour, closing a long and proud chapter of the biggest auto manufacturer in Canada.

Union officials said workers assembling the final truck had tears rolling down their faces.

The closing means the elimination of 2,600 jobs. That will leave General Motors in Oshawa with just 3,800 workers, down from a high of 18,000 in the 1980's.

The final pickup truck rolled off the assembly line at the General Motors truck plant in Oshawa, around 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2009.
