They're shutting down schools left and right and now they've canceled Mayfest.
But at 450 bucks a pop for a booth they say they may not have enough money to refund the exhibitors. Basically...you're just screwed.

Mayfest, other events will be canceled over flu concerns

The concerns over the spread of swine flu have led to the cancellation of Mayfest and all other major outdoor events in Fort Worth this weekend, according to a note sent out to police officers and administrators by Fort Worth Police Chief Jeff Halstead.

Mayfest officials have called a news conference for about 2 p.m. today, when they are expected to announce that the annual festival on the Trinity River will be canceled because of concerns of the swine flu.

Law enforcement officials working at the event, which was scheduled to open at 3:30 this afternoon, were overheard saying that the Centers for Disease Control told Mayfest to “shut down.”

City officials also are going to announce the cancellation of Cinco de Mayo celebrations in north Fort Worth and the rerouting of a bicycyle event, the 2009 Bike MS: Sam's Club Frisco to Fort Worth Ride, which was scheduled to end in downtown Fort Worth on Sunday morning, according to Halstead's note.

The note said city officials were working in cooperation with the Tarrant County Public Health Department in canceling the events.

Mayfest spokeswoman Carrie Cappel declined to confirm Mayfest was shutting down, but said there would be a news conference soon.

Mestival officials met Monday and discussed possible concerns about the swine flu and have been communicating with state and local agencies since then, Cappel said earlier.

The 37th annual festival, which was to run through Sunday, was expected to draw more than 200,000 people.

Some vendors said they already have been told of the cancellation.

William Stidham arrived late, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, from Austin. Forty-five minutes later, the self-taught watercolor artist hit the road, disappointed that Mayfest was shut down because of the Swine Flu scare.

In Grand Prairie, organizers said the Grand Prairie Cinco de Mayo Festival & Parade has been postponed to September.

"I think this is mass hysteria," he said, after he was told by organizers that the festival would shut down about three hours before the gates were to open.

He was counting on Mayfest to be a good show for his Sacred Heart series, which uses iconic subjects like Elvis Presley, John Lennon and Quanah Parker in them. One piece featured Johnny Cash, gazing at a Sacred Heart, surrounded by a ring of fire.

Besides the $800 he isn't sure he'll get back from fees and deposits for the show, he knows of one thing he'll never get back: his time.

Why are people getting so worked up about this one?

It's a flu, it doesn't seem to be very deadly. It's not even the season for flu. I would understand if bodies started piling up but man there are few deaths from this.

Oh and do you remember a few years ago where they had called in a guy to co-ordinate the "drying out" of the park after the usual Memphis in May Mud fest? I was that guy. It was embarrassing to see myself all over the news.

That seems like a really obvious answer, to me. It's all about convergence. If this flu epidemic was the only factor, then no problem. But combine it with 50 other devastating factors, and you get this kind of reaction. It's just one too damn many things. Crashing economy, China control looming, Obamanation, gun grabbing, loss of civil rights and free speech, Codex, on and on. This flu is just part of a TREND -- and that trend should scare the beejeesus out of everybody!
